Sorry double-posting but didn't want to use praise for last sling to lead into talking about my own; figured that'd be bad manners.

Anyway had an idea for my last sling to 1. make it a single string terminating knot like my beach-sling 2. make it able to double as a dog-leash by putting a loop towards the end.

Was thinking, as slinging is not tradition here in Sweden, that maybe I could make sling-leashes (terminating with BOTH a cracker and a carabiner on a loop) to sell to maybe offset some cost of material it has taken to learn this stuff. I left ONE full paracord in this, to be the cracker, for that reason (this one cracks WAY higher than just the empty cord and, since my old used sling is full cord all the way, actually sounds so much louder that I don't like it; even with an underhand throw it hurt my ears on the dry-runs Shocked).

On a second thought COULD leave two separate strings or leave the down-string even shorter and just do a granny-knot around the carabiner + melt (unsure about a carabiner whipping around attached to the cracker).

Failed x3 with this one because 1. For the FIRST time, ironically, got the release-knot bang on balanced thinking I'd make the down-string shorter (so maybe that's the secret) so just left it as is 2. I don't have a spare carabiner so actually never even tried to tuck a string back into the knot 3. Probably better to do the adjustable fingerloops and padding if one is to use it for a dog-leash as well (don't own a dog but I figure it might be annoying to hold onto after a while otherwise).

So a question... Despite a granny knot maybe working is there a good termination knot that ends with a loop (OR a loop and an extra string; that'd be ideal)? I was thinking of doing the normal turk's as and then tucking one string back into it before tightening (and maybe also melting the others closer to the knot), as written above, but might not hold up well (?) and maybe there are better options? Hope the question is clear.

Picture of the "failed" (never really tried in the end) sling/leash. What I have left on this sling is just cut the middle string connecting the pouch to size and, I'm thinking, do a cobra knot over each of the loops separately with a smaller diameter paracord just received (so it can be double AND single without issue) OR make it another thicker single. Pouch-transition best so far; minimal string used and didn't even need to pull/adjust before burning; stiff/holds shape really well too.

I noticed the baling twine (polypropylene) retention cord was really stiff, so I started wondering "why not make the release cord floppy floppy?" (In the great words of Ze Frank)
So I took some of the braided fishing line (Dacron polyester) I had from a previous project and spliced it in to finish.

So this is two different materials correct? It's a very pretty sling.

Thank you!

Yes, that's correct.  Polypropylene (white) and polyester (green).

Man, I really hope I'm missing something, 'cause the idea of having a carabiner on the end of my sling is kinda terrifying.  Plus, the weight would prevent any cracking.

Also, have you seen Lobo's posts about the sling dog?

No you are not missing anything; I'm still new and some ideas might be dumb idk yet... Never claimed to be smart. 😛

Have not seen anything called "sling dog" but sounds like something I will look up rn thank you!

Edit: looked it up... Yeah something like that. OK so terminating with a carabiner may not be good (though I'd ALSO have a cracker to stop but maybe not enough). Maybe then a double sided carabiner so that's just removable? Any suggestion of a good knot terminating in a loop in that case? Or just go with the turk? I tried searching but no luck thus far.

My first instinct when I need a loop in a rope is a Bowline, but I'm not sure if it'll work for what you need.

Definitely make the carabiner removable.  The sling would prob'ly still work with it (assuming it doesn't prevent the release cord from clearing the projectile), but it'd definitely stop the sling from cracking.  A crack happens through conservation of energy through a rope or chain of reducing (tapering) mass.  Since mass is going down, it has to travel faster to maintain the same energy.  Having a carabiner at the end suddenly adds back a bunch of mass lost in tapering the release cord, so no crack.

Bowline... Will look that one up as well thank you.

Cracking not super necessary in this case (I would assume), besides I can get a good crack from my beach-sling now and that one wasn't tapered (because I didn't know what the word meant at the time), so was more thinking yes a small carabiner adds weight but maybe a nice cracker of the frayed innards of the paracord (or a detachable one) would offset that.

On a second thought should maybe just do them as I have and leave "the booming leash-market" alone.😛 A sling is pretty pocketable as is. Selling a few at this point would be nice though after going through a lot of material in the learning phase (still IN that learning phase).

Summer season, got to do some slinging again. New and improved single-cord braided/woven design. Cordage pretty stiff so I couldn't tighten it more, but it works well.
Base structure from 2 consecutive braids, folded to make a sort of split pouch. Both cord ends were on the same side then, so I passed it through the middle, weaving a supporting structure at the same time.
Loop knot is a double 8, it provides much more surface area compared to any single-cord loop, which I find more comfortable to use.
Roughly 70cm long, good for stones up to ~3cm in diameter.

As usual, I use rough stones off the cliff. After 40 years of slinging I still can't get cnsistency. Day four: direct hit on first shot. Day five: no hits.

I like to throw wild stones and I sometimes have concentrated shots and sometimes a little less.  Roll Eyes
Three possibilities are posible.
1) Pick up the rocks before to shoot. Then throw them by decreasing sizes.
2) Select consistent projectiles from time to time. Tennis balls for example to not pollute the site.
3) Increase the target size because you are currently setting the bar very high.

Thanks, Tombelaine, for your great advice. I in fact know the right stones now, instinctively-- just under golf ball for my slim sling (my favourite), under egg size for my fat sling. Right now, I shoot at my bag because I have it with me, and it's a challenge. "Aim small, miss all the time".

Good idea.  I don't think I've see a knot like that used for a finger loop before.

Throwing in a picture of the latest sling (finished just now) and, since I have like five more started on rn, also another couple of (seemingly endless sorry) questions... Is it possible to post more than one photo in one post (kind of wanted to show both variations of single fingerloops, 4mm and 2mm cord, for comparison but don't feel that it warrants an extra separate post)?

Anyway this one has 2x paracord types. 2mm for the pouch X (I like this already because it's round so it doesn't look dumb when getting twisted) and weave for the fingerloop and then regular 4mm for the rest. Tapered as I usually do it (by just pulling the cords up and stripping them off staggered just after the pouch). Haven't measured it but it's about my current sweet spot (inside of thumb to shoulder).

This one feels REALLY good on a few dry throws and holds a tennisball well (still tend to do silly mistakes with the pouch at times but not here). Cracks loud as crap despite having removed all but one inner strand so rn unsure about wether to remove that too. Maybe the cracker is too short and weak (?); it's length of palm + 2/3 of thumb stretched out.

Used sling rn use an adjustable double loop that I fold to make single. Is there any good way of doing a single loop, looking like this, that's also adjustable? This loop is stiff and I don't know if that's a good thing or not (SLIGHTLY less stiff when going with the 4mm on the loop)? Wrist needs to be more active while swinging at least. Don't mind it but still can't be as lazy with it as with the double adjustable ones.

Edit: forgot to resize the picture.  Roll Eyes Also seems one CAN post more than one photo just have to host someplace else (?).

Looks real good! And yes, you can have up to 10 photos per post but it's not particularly obvious. The little plus button next to the "attachments" header will let you add more.

This is my first knotted pouch sling. Made it from cotton cord. Turned out a bit messy, especially the pouch, but it looks and functions well enough. Still not sure how much load it could take as I only used it with light stones so far.

Whelp, I made a couple of new ones, I have a bit of an obsession with the design, it's served me well, the first is an old one I made a month back, it's gotten beat up from a lot of use and the types of rocks I'm using. The other is my newest one, same paracord and same style.
