A flat cord naturally wants to orient its broad side against the wind. This can cause fluttering cords or other issues. If for a split second only one cord turns its flat side against the wind, then your pouch will turn in directions you dont want it to.
That's a great observation. I never thought about a cord catching the wind as it was moving through the air.

I think I'm the only one who does it the reverse. At least I don't know of anyone else who does. The reason is because of slinging with ice balls. When they melt on the raw side, the next ice ball will freeze the moisture and literally stick to the pouch. The finished (smooth) side is obviously much more resistance to that. For tennis balls, stones, or whatever else I agree, smooth side out.
