I finished mine with a standard bullwhip top knot and a dyneema cracker. The jute ripped off below the finishing knot. It was a good craft-grade jute that was a consistent thickness and bark-free... not the cheap twine from the hardware store. That doesn’t mean it’s not a bad batch, but it’s still disappointing.

I think I am done with jute for a while personally.

I think jute doesn't handle small radii under stress well. The fibers are too fine and the first few under stress break, and then thereafter it breaks with an unzipping effect. That's my theory.

I love how soft jute is, but I think that is also why it is weak. The fibers are small, which is why it feels soft, but it is also why it is prone to abrasion and tearing. Fibers like sisal are more robust mostly because they are thicker. Again, a theory, only anecdotal evidence to back it up.

That's a big compliment lol. Looks great man! What kind of leather did you use? I used to make and use apaches exactly like this, though perhaps not as nice, and they work flawlessly.

Very nice slings. @Judo What braids did you use? They look great!
I haven't tested it yet, but I think a much more effective way of removing elasticity from wool is by either steaming it or by pouring hot water on it WHILE it is stretched. This makes it so that the the stretched wool fibers cannot relax back to their original state due to the change that the fibres undergo.

My lurking holiday has come to an end.

Thanks all for the kind words, I'm really happy with how this one worked out!

@Morphy: Thanks for the compliment! The leather is furniture grade, though perhaps a little more premium than the usual offcuts. I got a bunch of a4 sheets from amazon which seem good quality. I do love an apache sling, though I feel like after soaking the wool might be a little bit too flexible for this size of pouch, but I will have to test.

@Albion: That's something to try for sure. I got the andean sling braids book for christmas, so will have plenty of opportunity to try out different methods. The braids themselves are nothing fancy, but I do like how the colours worked out. I think the retention is mostly a 6 strand round braid which transfers into a 12 strand when I add the blue material. The release cord starts as the same 12 strand but with the colours in different places and reduces down to 8 IIRC.
