a quick pic of what I'm talking about

I've tried, but apparently I am terrible at whipping, because every attempt has just had the whipping unwind or rip off. Leather actually ends up being less work for me because it stays on for so long. I actually don't think I've had to replace any leather yet, I lose the sling first.

Apache slings and split pouch sling

Nice slings.

And stone collection!  The problem with starting such a thing is that you want to save each stone for a really good target, and since you rarely have them with you when a worthy target presents itself,  you just end up accumulating a lot of stones.

If anyone reads the outdoors comedy author Patrick McManus, I highly suggest the story "Throwing Stuff". He summarizes the phenomenon pretty well in that story.

I finished this one the other day.  It took a really long time to get it done.  I was about halfway through it and stopped.  Just didn't feel like working on it for about a month.  I also messed up some of the braid where it splits for the pouch, so I had to undo that and fix it.

I like the way it turned out.  The inspiration for the pattern is based on a sling I got from Luis.  I've only thrown it a dozen times so far.  It feels nice, but a little tight.  I think it will be a lot better once I get it broken in.

The cordage is hemp.  The pouch is leather.  The length is about 30 inches (76 cm).

That's a looker Joe.  I like the pattern. How many strands?

I'm still amazed you can throw so consistently with such a cupped pouch. I yank my shots hard whenever I've tried a cupped pouch.

Thanks!  The entire sling uses an 8-strand herringbone braid.  The finger loop and pouch have 8 strands, and then most of the sling has them doubled up to 16.  The release cord is then also tapered down to 8.

The cup of the pouch looks much more extreme when it's empty.  Here's another pic to show how a tennis ball sits in it.  I think I've gotten used to a cupped pouch out of a necessity.  For the life of me, I can't keep an ice ball in a split pouch.  I'm sure there's folks on this forum who can, but I drop them way too often.

I do have a number of balearic slings that I really want to use, so I'm planning to make some rusty balls as soon as I remember to buy balloons at the store.

Looks really professional Joe. The braid is so good I thought it was store bought stuff. But it's tapered. Very nice.

I don't want to sound like I'm showing off but I took Luis' Balearic sling out yesterday with ice balls on a walk. Didn't drop a single one! I was pretty amazed honestly. Shows how good Luis' slings are rather than my skills really Cheesy

Damn fine looking sling Joe! I've noted your style, it's something of a minimalist apache by the looks of it? Does it affect the pouch behaviour or is it purely for reduction in weight/air resistance?

As to the ice ball thing, perhaps a thicker/stiffer split branches will do the job? Maybe with leather covering. Personally I find split pouches are not great for spherical ammo, though this is quite rare to find naturally so not much of an issue.

Thanks everyone!

@Kick - Your versatility with different slings and various styles is definitely something I envy.  Wink

@JudoP - The intention of that pouch design was solely to facilitate that part of the sling making process.  I used to use a full pouch that was stitched on the whole way around.  At one point I had the thought that the pouch could just attach at four points, and should still be as effective as a full pouch.  They're really quick and easy.  Cut out an 'X' shape, a little contact cement on the tabs wrapped around the sling, and a couple rivets for some added strength.  The lessened weight and projectile contact might be adding a benefit, but I can't say that I've really noticed it.
