“Crow Hop” possible, but what am I doing wrong?
Aug 5th, 2026 at 9:17pm

Added a baseball “crow hop” and got extra distance.

But can’t figure out the timing. Any suggestions on how to do the crow hop better?

Here is video of where I am:

I don't know exactly how to perform this "style" correctly, but here's what you can hardly argue with:
There are many sports involving throwing or hitting, where the body and its components move in a manner similar to slinging. These are often recognized professional sports, such as baseball, which utilizes the overhead throw and the figure-eight style.
So, if you study the professional approach of athletes in these sports, then in my opinion, you can improve your performance in throwing classes.
For example, javelin and shot puts require a short run-up. I noticed there that before the final throw, the front leg shouldn't bend at the knee, but should instead ground to the ground, transferring the momentum from the back leg and the entire body forward, like a lever. The run-up itself is usually performed with a slight backward lean of the entire body. But here, again, the timing needs to be right.

That is a good point. I have a baseball background so trying to “solve” this as a baseball problem. But maybe sport like javelin would be worth video study?  Javelin keeps the body untwisted and roughly 90 degrees to target…..that is like the figure 8 start position!

In any case, my baseball background was as an infielder (shortstop mostly, little 3rd base sometimes). The “crow hop” is more an outfielder’s skill. An outfielder will have more of a run up I think where I have more of a kind of shuffling I feel.

I actually feel more comfortable with a “pro step” where right leg steps behind the other….but of course the criticism of the “pro step” is less distance than the crow hop.

But in any case, some study of baseball videos might help me as you suggest.

Anybody else can offer advice?

I think the nuances are hard to describe over text. In person I bet I could offer more insight. But your timing is pretty good. Honestly, just keep at it. It took me a while to figure out a run up, but with repetition, it started to feel more second nature. You'll get there on your own for sure.

The best advice I have is to try it with a shorter sling first. The longer the sling, the less like a throw and the more 'sling-like' the motion. The shorter slings will feel much more like a natural hand-throw.  You can easily feel the difference and just increase the length of the sling as you find the timing.

Last year I spent a few sessions trying to add a crow hop to my distance slinging style, but I was not successful. I felt like I could make it work with the rhythm of the long sling, but in the end I could not get the tension across my upper body that I needed for a powerful throw.

Today I tried it with figure 8 style and a 25 inch sling. It worked great. It felt natural and I did not have to think about timing at all. I switched between no crow hop and crow hop with every throw. You can see the data below. The crow hop increased the velocity about 8 %.

I filmed the data collection just for the purpose of collecting data. So I am not fully in frame doing the crow hop, but if someone wants to watch it anyways:

That is really great data. Thanks so much!

You have an 8% increase in velocity-I had a 7% increase in distance (https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1785798557).

Clearly there is some benefit!!!!

Comparing my attempts to yours in the video really helped me.

First, I just hold the ball in front of me with my left hand. You start by swinging the ball. I don’t know if that helps velocity/distance but you look so much more smooth and natural and relaxed. I am going to try that swinging start just cause it looks so much nicer!

Second, in baseball there is a “pro step” which keeps your hips/shoulders turned back and ready to throw……vs the crow hop where you kind of get into throwing position during the middle of the hop. See this video https://youtu.be/vMU7ds_WpiM?is=qCOf14B_v3x0psqP.   The “pro step” is just stepping your right leg BEHIND your left as you move forward, which does actually take a little more coordination and flexibility, so slightly harder. But comparing your video to my style, you are more facing the target when you throw which would totally not work the way I “naturally” throw….I want my hips 90 degrees to the target (hips closed)…..but I am not doing that in my crow hop and my hips are slightly facing the target (hips open).    All this to say, your video helped me see an error in my attempts. I think I might try the “pro step” and/or pay attention to hip positioning during crow hops.
