Can't deer hunt, broadheads hopeless!!
Oct 2nd, 2010 at 12:01am

I don't think I will be deer hunting this year... Cry Cry Cry Cry as I can't find any decent broadheads at any of the stores near me, the best they have are a super thin, thinner than a razor 2 blade broadhead with a helical twist to the base of the blades, which I believe are even ILLEGAL here as a corkscrew broadhead is illegal and I think that's what they are!  They are for sale at walmart and canadian tire and the other stores don't carry any except for the kind with what looks like a target point and mechanical blades that snap out the back, I would voluntarily shoot myself in the foot with one of those before I shot a deer with it.

So I got out some old 3 blade Bodkin brand broadheads my dad had and tried to sharpen them up, but for the life of me though I used file, whetstone and ceramic I cannot get them up to razor sharp though I came close on a blade or two.  I think the steel is very soft as it grinds away far too easily and has a funny color too it, kind of bright very light greenish tinge?
So I got out some ones my dad made last year but never used made out of circular saw blade cut to shape of a 2 blade broadhead.  I can get these almost razor sharp but the steel is very thick, and I can't imagine it cutting very well because of that and I think it is the reason I still can't get them razor sharp.

I would make bone ones as my stone and glass aren't quite ready to use yet, but close, but I haven't got enough practice with the bone point making either.
I'm going to keep looking for a nice two blade of an appropriate thickness with no twist to the blades, but season is getting close and I don't know if I will be ready.
Any sure-fire tricks for sharpening a 3 blade?

dunno the first thing about bow hunting, but you can probably search online for arrow heads. as for your old soft broad heads with the greenish tinge it might be because it's been untempered by some heat like say, if it was too close to a fire for too long? i know some steels turn an oily black color

Bodkins are good heads but they do have soft steel.  The secret is to lighten up as you get it sharp.  Use lighter pressure as the point starts to get sharp, otherwise you will roll your edge under and it will actually get duller.  Bill
