Hey all. Here's my first attempt at an extra long sling. Inspired by the
Pouch design of the sling rjb sent me for S.I.T.H. But with a
Twist....literally. The cords are reverse twisted from 2 colors of jute
Twine. 4 ply. Flemish bowstring loop for the finger loop. The sling
measures45 inches folded length. Figured that to be an appropriate
number Given recent discussions on the board;-) i wanna learn the figure 8
With one of my shorter slings and move into this one. Been watchin lots
Of videos. I like the reverse twist method of making cordage because
It is much faster than braiding. Also the flemish loop requires no glue or
Whipping to stay together. You can just cut the tag ends off flush on the
Taper and they just seem to disappear into the twist. Hope y'all like it.

I am working on my fourth 16-strand braid sling, now in black and white, and thought that it maybe was time for a solid woven pouch instead of the split Rockman type. I made this test piece with 4-strand round braid to visualise it, but is still not sure. I am adapted to the split pouch now.
But the "test piece" came out rather nicely, and did well during testing with small stones and a tennis ball.

It may be frayed, but it puts fire behind a rock. It's made of 1/8 inch cotton cord with jute woven into the pouch.

An old sling is like a worn in shoe. It may look terrible, but it feels so comfortable. That worn one feels like an old friend.

I valued my compound bow because it was expensive, and was over protective because when I broke it became a worthless hunk of plastic and I'd have to go shopping and spend too much money again.

This is why I love primitive skills. Longbows and slings are valued because they have the spirit of a companion, but little material value (to the owner) because a sling can easily be crafted again and a new enchanted process begins.

I finaly got time to sit down and make one last week (Wednesday I believe?) It's only a 24 inch one with a 6 inch split pouch for tennis balls and my friends and cousins dogs. I used a finger loop, which I usualy don't do, with a 6 strand flat braid then folded the rope in half to do a 12 strand square braid then two six strand flat braids again for the pouch. Excuse me for the horribal horribal picture quality, only camera I have is my cell phone.

I made this sling for a friend of mine earlier this year. As far as the specs go, it's an Aussiesling-style pouch (because I have one of his and I really like it) made from conveyor belt rubber super-glued together, 8-strand cotton butcher's twine for the lines, braided as a 4-strand braid, and flattened 550 parachute cord for the braided knots. The lines are 18 inches long. This is the third decent sling I've made.
