So, english.....you are past the 'I will hunt and kill every creationist' tantrum now?

At any rate,

God bless your heart.

(That's not written in stone or anything)

And english,  as I've stated before to you via PM in a civilized, adult manner.....simply manage a bit of self control by avoiding my topics completely and I will be happy to avoid yours......A task I somehow manage to enjoy a vast majority of the time anyway.  8)

Responding to another's heartfelt, shared beliefs with childish mockery, threats of violence, and other inane, spoiled outcries.....simply for the purpose of registering one's derision will get you nowhere.  Which, as coincidence would have it,  is where you seem to have started in the first place.  That is, to hear you tell it.

It's Chris's own private California to do with as he pleases.....

And if that includes allowing contentious brats to treat it as their own schoolyard playground.....buses and all....

That's certainly his perrogative.

How can I avoid direct confrontation?  I just looooove to argue.  I like it.  I like philosophy, and unlike your narrow "religion" (a name given to a specific type of philosophy), the philosophy I like can draw on all the evidence of science - all of it.  From social anthropology to biology, paleo-anthropology to linguistics - physics to geology, even.  Everything can be used in explaining the universe - why choose to ignore some of it?
"Childish mockery":  On the subject of this particular statement, I shall try and poo-poo it with all due respect - that is to say, none.  I have used pure, scientific argument from the beginning, and when that seemed to fail against the solid brick wall of your misguided "faith", indeed, I resorted to a decision to kill each and every fundy.  However, neither course is that of a child.  Children have faith in simple, direct authority, and in God. They don't know advanced science, and they certainly don't know how to hunt people down.  If simply stating that there are two known types of coelacanth is childish, then call me Benny-pick-my-nose.
You call me a child, a kid, a lad, a "disturbed teenager", a "contentious brat" - all to avoid accepting that I might be right.  You are condescending, and if anyone's literary style here is for public viewing, it's yours.  If you wish to raise religious messages via PM, then feel free - but when you begin in a public forum, accept that answers will also come via public forum.  Similarly, you state that you can easily avoid my posts and threads.  However, this is quite clearly untrue, as you have demonstrated by posting in "Flat World" et al.

Keep digging young man,  Cheesy  at the rate you're going....You'll get to China with plenty of time to re-popularize the Iron Palm technique and show off your specially prepared flint bladed club, stained with the blood of primitive creationists!

(I wrote this after I had read about halfway through this thread ... so if it seems out of place ... it IS!)

Aw, come on, people ... how many threads in here do you know of, that didn't get hijacked halfway through?  NONE of the threads I have read, have stayed entirely on the original topic all the way through.  Except for a couple that never drew enough responses to get hijacked.

I admit, Leeds_Lobber, your example condenses a hijack down to the minimal example ... but has TechStuf actually ever done that? Point me to an example!  Or point me to an example where he took over someone else's thread to discuss religion/politics/whatever? or point me to a thread that he started on such a topic, in the General Discussion (i.e., SLINGING) forum?  (That last you may be able to do, any number of us have put something there that a moderator later moved to Administrative/Other/FlamesEtc...)

I do enjoy that we all seem to be able to take a light approach to such things.  Leeds, your reply to Taiki's accusation was hilarious!

As for repeating the same information ... that has happened with a lot of topics.  How many times has a thread been started about thin versus fat cords?  Sling length?  Range?  Braiding?  Kinetic energy of a stone versus a bullet? (I just re-did that one myself, day before yesterday)  Such is inevitable in a forum like this; we have new members all the time, the current crop of newbies ask the same questions I asked a year ago (or you, however long ago), we keep discussing the same topics (and don't stop, by the way, new information pops up when we do so, even on old topics -- this is a DISCUSSION forum, not a research archive!)

Anyway ... let's see, what was I saying?  Forgot ... guess I'm getting old ... off the soapbox, Dale!

Dale, you seem like quite a dude.  I commend your dudeliness.
Well, the thing that you just wrote, Tech, it's got me confounded.  Why, I must be so confused and stupid not to understand what in the Hell you mean, cracker.  If you weren't so exceptionally bright and amazing - oh, and clever, wondrous, well-endowed, fantastic and enlightening, of course - then I would be able to forgive your reticence regarding the matter of the coelacanth.  Poor neglected fish, that you have resigned to the scrap heap of the conversation because in actuality it doesn't fit what you're saying... how can it be, O wondrous Tech, that there can exist a fish from 340 million years ago, still alive today, apparently unchanged, but with two distinct forms?  Do answer.  Not in code, for the dim-eyed, 'cross-the-pond simpletons (science?  What d'ya need that fer?), but in simple English, the language of the bless'd isle of which I do hither.
Oh, I must have forgotten.  You can't answer in simple English, because you don't have the requisite knowledge!  I can almost see your brow encased in thick layers of dried-on sweat from the number of times you have attempted to save your own butt from the flames of science using your wild forms of dialectal argumentation!  I can see the seat at your computer desk encrusted with pizza bread crumbs and "American cheese"... the keys of the keyboard thrust down with a quivering finger for each nonsensical blast in uniform reticence disguised as contempt and knowledge.  Need I PM you, Tech, so as to avoid further embarassment to your person?

Perhaps one of english's cohorts would care to help keep his filibuster meltdown from losing steam?   Undecided

P.S.  'Cracker'.....is this a reverse racism thing.....are you black? Or is it simply hip pejorative slang against we American pizza connoisseurs?  I don't get it.

TechStuf, English,

I don't get it myself.  I have heard "cracker" as a slang term for a resident of Georgia (U.S.A., not Asia); its origin is unclear, though there are competing theories.  Nowadays, it refers to persons of Caucasian origin ("whites") who are, or are held to be, racist.  But it sounds like you know this, TechStuf.

Perhaps the word has a different connotation in Britain?  How about it, English?

No, it has the same meaning.  I've always understood that it comes from "whipcracker" - ie, a white slave owner.  I merely meant that Tech seems to have the morals of the early 19th century southerners - that is to say, a devotion to Christianity - and as we all know that Tech is a fan of Marion "the Swamp Fox" it seemed only natural to assume that Tech is/was anti-abolition....

In any case... the Coelacanth......?  Come on!  You brought it up.  Now the fish just doesn't want to dive... it's hanging around, smelling up the joint...  No more BS, no more semantic arguments (those are for people who lose, and lawyers.  I don't know which is worse.)  Just answer - how can it be?

I could give you some coelacanth arguments if you like.
1.  God changed it a little, to test our faith.
2.  The two types of coelacanth are two entirely different types of fish that just happen to look similar.

Can you think of anymore?

OK, English, since you gave one of the competing etymological hypotheses for where "cracker" came from, I'll give another:  The folks in Kentucky (another of the United States) had a penchant for converting corn (maize) into a distilled inebriant called whiskey.  The first step in the process was cracking the grains, then came fermentation.  The residents of that state hence became known as "crackers."  But the name itself somehow shifted its attachment to Georgia -- where they also produced a lot of whiskey -- and the folks in Kentucky came to be known as "moonshiners," "moonshine" being a common name for the end product of their labors.

"Cracking corn" also refers to boasting (dunno why), and to snoring (cracking dried corn grains, produces quite a lot of noise, as do I -- er, as does a snorer), so there are some other possible origins of "cracker".  But none of this explains why a white Georgia resident would be so called.

perhaps, because crackers tend to be light colored, and not made of dark grain wheat, therefore a white person might be considered a cracker.

(just between you and i, i think that the other theories make more sense)
