New sling makes tennis balls HEAVY!

This is a new version of the Twin Loops sling that was made by adding a cobra weave on top of the west country whipping at the pouch center.

The cobra weave added 31” of additional paracord on top of the 33” of paracord used in the west country whipping. Per google, the paracord weight increased from 6.2 grams (WCW only) to 12.5 grams (WCW+cobra) at the pouch center.


Compared to a 59 grams tennis ball, the weight added by the paracord to the pouch center went from making the tennis ball feel 10.5% heavier (WCW only) to 21.2% heavier (WCW+cobra).

So how does this new sling perform??

As noted in the link in the first post above, comments about the WCW-only Twin Loops sling included:

-more accurate with much less scatter vs seatbelt sling
-tennis ball felt heavier and easier to throw. Felt like ball went where I threw it.
-sling felt “snappy” and released quickly. Google says extra pouch weight pulls harder on retention cord…this extra pulling snaps pouch open quicker.

Adding even more pouch weight by tying the cobra weave on top of the WCW basically amplified all of the above characteristics and made the sling even more accurate and “snappier”.  The main difference is while the WCW-only makes the tennis ball feel heavier, adding the cobra weave makes the tennis ball feel HEAVY!!!

That was the overwhelming impression. It really does not feel like a tennis ball at all. It feels like a much heavier ball. I would say the sling also feels like it takes way more effort to throw. I think that is because the weight or heaviness is felt in your hand (maybe extra pulling on the retention cord due to extra pouch weight).


At the moment, I prefer how the WCW-only Twin Loop sling feels with the less throwing effort despite adding the cobra weave increasing the sling’s accuracy slightly.  That is just me. But the knock on tennis balls are they are too light and both versions of this Twin Loop sling help with that significantly.

Hope to do some distance throwing to see if there is any difference soon.

Interesting that this topic came up.  I don't know if you're on Instagram, but andrew_slings (who is NooneOfConsequence on the forum here) recently posted a video on slings with heavier pouches: https://www.instagram.com/andrew_slings/reel/DZk3lKsqScp/.  His data came back showing a heavier pouch required more energy from the slinger, but ultimately resulted in a loss of velocity.

You might be getting better performance with the weighted pouch, and if so that's great.  But what "feels" better isn't always translating into what's actually happening.  The discussion of heavier slings (usually referring to braided slings in the argument) vs. thin lighter weight slings and which one gets more speed has been going on for a long time.  But every slinger I've seen put the two up against each other gets more speed/distance from a light weight sling.  Despite the heavier sling feeling like it has more power.

All that said, the sling you have here might be playing somewhere in the middle.  The weight of the pouch might help gain some pouch velocity, but because it's still a single strand sling there isn't a thick braided release cord to push through.  I would definitely be interested in seeing your results.

This is Google making stuff up.  Pouches don't snap open.  Projectiles push them open.  When the release cord is released, the projectile will roll out of the pouch opening it.  There can be contact with the sling for a couple inches (give or take) before the ball is completely clear of the sling.  If you've seen discussions about a sling having a clean release vs. not, this is what's being talked about.  In general, the less a sling interferes with the projectile as it's clearing the sling, the cleaner the release.  There is a balance though.  IronGoober did some testing a while back and found that thicker/heavier slings can give better spin to a projectile.  Likely because it's rolling out of the pouch for a longer time.

Excellent video. Thanks for sharing that. Love seeing data!

For me, heavier ammo is more accurate to throw. I have thrown from plastic whiffle golf balls all the way to egg sized rocks and consistently found heavier ammo just has a better feel and goes where I throw it. By adding weight to the pouch, tennis balls feel heavier and I throw them significantly more accurately (seatbelt vs Twin Loop sling…..both paracord slings….no idea how woven sling throws)


More accurate (cause I can better feel the ball) but I don’t think faster. I made no claim power/velocity has increased. In fact my intuition says the heavier thing throws slower and therefore not as far. I hope to throw for distance soon. That will give me good data and I can really see the velocity/distance penalty (if there is one). I will surprised if the heavier feeling sling out distances the lighter sling.



The Twin Loop sling does feel “snappy”. Initial throws were to the right (like an early release). Why?? Not sure to be honest   

“Snappy” can be explained by the pouch opening quicker. Force = retention cord mass times acceleration…..the greater pouch weight means higher cord tension (force) so the retention cord should accelerate faster out of the way.  Faster accelerating release cord would “snap” out of your hand. This might be true.

Alternatively half the pouch is mostly air bracketed by a top and bottom paracord. So there is minimum material for the tennis ball to push out of the way. Tennis ball then “escapes” out of the pouch faster. Or you could say the tennis ball “snaps” free faster.   This might be true too.

I also don’t think really understand the geometry fully. At the moment of release, I imagine the release cord could be in front of the tennis ball with some throwing styles.   I could also see the release cord on top of the tennis ball with other styles. So the direction the release cord moves “to get out of the way” can be radically different depending on where the release cord starting position is.  Easier “get out of the way” paths should be “snappy”??

There is also this idea in my head the pouch applies a clamping force on the ball during the spin. Let go of the release cord and the clamping force goes to zero. This can’t be instantaneous….there must be some amount of time due to inertia of the release cord….dragging the clamping force application out for a longer time. If this time is then reduced or minimized somehow, the sling feels “snappy”??

My thought on adding the cobra weave to make the pouch heavier was the sling became more accurate but possibly made the sling throw slower and for less distance. Data confirms this is the case BUT ONLY FOR certain throwing styles that have a more “spinning” windup.

I compared 30.75” Twin Loop slings with and without the cobra weave added to the west country whipping (WCW) at the pouch center.



Accuracy:

Adding the cobra weave doubles the number of hits at 20 yards during the first dozen throws. After that, both WCW-only and the cobra weave sling start to perform the same.  This clearly show, for me at least, the heavier feels due to the cobra weave is more immediately accurate….but then I adjust after a dozen throws.  So while the cobra weave actually is more accurate at first, and even if this a a very temporary effect that disappears after a dozen throws……I did notice the “heavier tennis ball” feeling due to the extra weight of the cobra weave does not ever disappear even after dozens and dozens and dozens of throws.



Distance:

After a total of 50 throws, Figure 8 style showed both slings averaged an identical 72 yards throwing a tennis ball. Each sling had a maximum distance throw of 75 yards too. Most likely the figure 8 for me had the same amount of “spinning” windup (or rather a more limited sling acceleration path/time). 

However, after 64 throws total, the Byzantine style with its higher “spinning” (accelerating time) windup showed a huge difference in distances between the two slings. The WCW-only sling averaged 77 yards with a maximum of 80 yards while the heavier cobra weave sling averaged only 69 yards with a maximum of 76 yards!!    The extra weight decreased the tennis ball average distance by 8 yards (10.4%) and also decreased the maximum distance by 4 yards.



So there you have it. If you are a figure 8 only person, adding the cobra weave might help you temporarily get more accurate more quickly with no loss in throwing distance (or implied velocity). So try adding the cobra weave if you like the feel of a heavy tennis ball.

However for Byzantine or most likely other spinning windups, the cobra weave cost distance (and velocity most likely) so I would not recommend adding the cobra weave. The WCW-only gives a good feedback for accuracy by adding a little weight to tennis balls with still allowing more distance vs the cobra weave.

100%!  You and most slingers.  A little more weight in the pouch means more feedback for you to work with.

Sorry.  My misinterpretation.  Descriptors like "snappy' and "quicker release" tend to indicate a faster moving projectile.  I was just reading through things a little too quickly, so my fault.  I didn't mean to misrepresent.

It's not about the release cord being in front of the ball (although that can absolutely happen).  It's about the direction the projectile moves when the sling is released.  The projectile will try to move in a tangential line to the arc of the sling.  But the sling is in the way because it's still rotating.  It's literally just for a split second, but this happens with any projectile and any sling.  You can see it pretty well in this video from Goober: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEUM6-XarKM.  Thinner and lighter slings will interfere with the projectile less.  Which is why they tend to have faster/cleaner releases.  You mentioned the tennis balls going to right.  That means you're getting a cleaner release from the sling.  Strangely that's not necessarily a good or bad thing.  It depends on the slinger and what they prefer.


And great test data! Thumbs Up  The different results between the styles is interesting.

A while back IronGoober made a post about the amount of time it took for a projectile to clear the pouch and how it related to the amount of spin that resulted.  I can't find it.  If anyone can dig it up and post the link, I'll give you a virtual pat on the back.

The data is consistent with the idea “lighter slings throw farther”.  A person can only apply “x” amount of energy and a lighter sling takes less energy to spin, therefore more energy goes into the projectile…or at least that’s how it seems to work in my head.

I wonder if this “interference” you describe costs “energy”? 

What I mean is for distance, I would think you want all the “energy” making the projectile moving forward. The fact the projectile spins might mean some of the energy is being dissipated due to pouch friction (possibly even heat???) and/or some of the energy is used to spin the ammo instead of push the ammo forward.

Spin stabilized ammo I am sure adds distance…but ideally you want a minimum effective spin rate. Excessive spin could mean more energy was used to spin instead of push the ammo forward.

I wonder if adding a flat spring to the pouch could be beneficial?  Maybe you could change how fast the pouch opens…and in that way dial in the perfect, minimal spin.  Or maybe the spring “adds” energy to compensate for the energy that is “lost” spinning the ammo???

I am sure I am just talking nonsense. But how cool would it be the swap flat springs (they are just strips of metal) for different weight ammo? Kind of like dialing in the suspension on my dirt bike!

I have some 1000fps footage of several different slings opening with tennis balls… let me dig it up and find a place to drop the footage so you can see what is happening during the release… may take a few days (weeks?) to get it all together.

I think, when a pouch opens too fast (with a spring), then it pushes extra hard against the projectile. The ends of the pouch might go in the right direction, but the middle of the pouch, where the projectile is sitting, goes in the direction of the projectile.

The “ideal” sling disappears suddenly just as the ammo is exiting the pouch. Once the ammo is accelerated, any further interaction with the projectile will knock it off course. I noticed this while experimenting with two slings of identical geometry but with different surface friction properties. The higher friction surface was hitting more to the right with a left-handed sidearm throw, and the low friction projectile had significantly less spin.  I guess I need to add this to the list of thimgs that need a more formal and methodical testing regime 🤷‍♂️

Floating: fascinating link, thanks for finding that.  And you are right the spring may not act like I think it would. Between pouch stiffness, ammo shape/weight, etc. the spring might interact with the projectile significantly instead of my naive assumption the spring would simple act on the pouch only.  But that link does indicate a spring would get a faster release…..but no idea if that would actually increase distance. I kind of think distance would increase as the ammo is “free” quicker from pouch drag/interference, but am just guessing.

NOOC: since we can’t make a disappearing “ideal” sling, would instead be possible to make an ideal “friction” sling?  You show pouch friction directly changes the projectile spin. To throw longer distances the projectile must be thrown with higher velocity…..irongoober shows higher velocity means higher projectile spin rate.

To me, there must be an “ideal” spin rate and if you spin the projectile faster you are just wasting energy. I don’t know what that ideal spin rate is. But you lower friction slings should be able to throw higher velocity with less spin rate than a high friction slings should. So low friction sling  should throw farther????

There are two main reasons to add spin: stability is one, and this depends on the specific aerodynamic characteristics of your ammo. The other reason for spin is Magnus effect, which can alter the trajectory of the ammo in flight.
