New Twin Loop sling
Jun 1st, 2026 at 9:20pm

This is a “Twin Loop” sling I made for throwing tennis balls. I am sure the idea can be resized for any other round object.

This Twin Loop sling performs very well and is very, very quick and easy to make. Please see this discussion about the performance of the Twin Loop sling as well as ideas for different variations of this Twin Loop sling:

Here is a pic of the Twin Loop sling and the tutorial for making this sling is below.

Step 1.  Take two separate pieces of paracord and tie a 3.25” loop at the end of each cord.

These loops are each 1/2 of the pouch so it is important that each loop is identical is size if you want a nice, symmetrical pouch. If you don’t care the pouch is symmetrical then each loop can be a bit different in size.

I used a figure 8 follow through knot to make each loop. But any knot will do I suppose.

Step 2:  tape the center of the loops together.

I used masking tape. But perhaps duct tape would be better (see next step)

Step 2, continued:  with the center of the loops connected by the masking tape, you can see the pouch shape that was created

Step 3: permanently connect the center of the paracord loops and the pouch will be finished.

IMPORTANT: the centers of the paracord loops should permanently fixed together over a distance between 2.25” to 2.50”.  This distance forms the pouch to tennis ball size…so adjust this distance if you are using some other size ball.

Option A: since this sling is for tennis balls, very likely just duct tape would do the job of keeping the paracord loops connected. Just make sure you use enough layers of duct tape so that the loops do not fly apart as you spin the sling.  This is the easy, fast option.

Option B: using #18 nylon mason line, connect the centers of the paracord loops with whipping. This is the option I chose and it did not take too much time to do. Perhaps it is more durable than duct tape as well (?)

In any case, I did not have duct tape on hand but I have plenty of mason line, so option B was for me!

Step 4:  just add your finger loop to the retention cord and also a knot at the end of the release cord and you are finished.

I did not measure how much extra cord was needed to make the loops at the pouch end, but if you just make and tie the first 3.25” pouch loop before cutting the paracord to length, you can then unspool the paracord from spool to the exact length you need (the end of the 3.25” loop being the center of the pouch)

Here are pics of finshed pouch

After throwing a few tennis balls, the Twin Loop sling performed very well and there was no sign the mason line common whipping suffered any ill effects trying to keep it the 3.25” pouch loops together. Very happy with the result!

So even though there is no issue with using that mason line (so far!), why not make that loop connection in the center of the pouch even stronger??

To make a more strongly connected pouch, first make the loops 3.50” instead of 3.25”. Then replace the mason line common whipping with 550 paracord and tie the 3.50” loops together with west country whipping. (whipping still 2.25” to 2.50” in length and centered on the 3.50” loops).

Pics show the west country whipped pounch

That ended up looking really good.  Nice job! Thumbs Up

I wasn't a fan of the masking tape.  With tennis balls, probably not too much of a problem.  But my concern with anything heavier is it would give out at some point without warning.  Duct tape I think would be much better.  I think you would see it wearing out and could replace it before a total failure.  Gorilla tape would likely do the job well too.

But the cordage wrap, that looks great.

The masking tape was just temporary to hold the loops together so I could tie the whipping. But very good point about using a strong tape. Gorilla tape is 2 to 3 times stronger than duct tape…that would be a smarter choice for durability.

TIL - quick google search and found “Gorilla Ultimate Tape”   This is 5 times stronger than the original gorilla tape!  Did not know this exists. This ultimate tape is then 10 to 15 times stronger than duct tape. Clearly this is the tape to use!!

Heres what i came up with.
I took each loop and twisted it 180° so it creates a figure eight. attaching the two figure eight heads together like the twin loop and then compressing the figure eight so where the two cords cross is turned into another double strand warp for the weave. I took the black cord and wove that between the two stranded red warp, the red and yellow warp, and then the yellow-yellow. The two loose ends on either side were then joined with a brummel lock and tapered from two strands @full thickness to 1 gutted cord on the release and to a full cord on the retention.
