Yeah, all I did was ask ChatGPT how I can improve my throws after I described in detail my approach to slinging.  I told it that I was aiming at my target.  ChatGPT suggested that I aim for release windows that are in front of me.  Kinda like how  artillery aim indirect fire.  This would allow me to be more consistent.

I don't mean to tread on any toes, but LLMs are hit and miss with mainstream topics and more than dubious at best when it comes to niche things like slinging. There is a sparcity of written material on slinging rarely found in other hobbies, therefore anything Slinging related has a very high chance of being either completely hallucinated or comprised of posts here in the forum taken out of context.

In my experience, the release (and aiming) is an unconcious action, just as one doesn't conciously decide when to release a ball when throwing. Iron goober has some good videos on aiming adjustment. Either in the videos or here somewhere is discussed that starting the power stroke earlier/later or adjusting the angle of the body relative to the target can serve to adjust the aiming direction. Fine tuning aim is a matter of practice with consistent ranges, targets and projectiles.

You are welcome to join one of the slinging Discord servers as well (if you haven't already), there we can take a look at your slinging technique (vids, pics etc) and perhaps give some pointers.

I recommend treating LLM advice like you would anyone else’s advice.  You have to evaluated the advice recommended.  The source is secondary.  If you have don’t have a lot of time to waste and lots of advice to choose from, prioritize what you invest time based on the source.  In the end you still need to evaluate the actual advice itself.

Consistency is paying off.  After vacation and a few things got in the way of my routine.  I practiced Saturday and today.  I’m feeling the consistency of the throw.  Most of my throws are barely missing the target with a few hitting and fewer still randomly flying anywhere but near the target.  I’m hoping soon, I’ll be placing my shots in the frisbee golf basket at thirty feet without much thought.  Then I can start increasing power!   Grin

I switched my ammo from tennis balls to juggling balls from Amazon.  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GZDZP73?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

I used orange duct tape to wrap around these balls to give them more strength.  I am hoping the bright orange will make them easier to find in the grass.  Overall, they have a nice weight of 1.9 oz.  But they are more expensive than making the sand filled rust balls.

Breakthrough today.

I figure out my figure 8 throw.  Mentally, I separated the windup from the throwing release process.  I thought about what bandit said about throwing a baseball, and I focused on my release like I was throwing a ball.  It worked.  I seemed to have increased my hits to 40%.  The misses were respectably close to the target.  My duff throws were about 20% at most.  It took me 17 months to get here.

So now I feel confident that I can throw at my target at any time, versus a random coin toss that my attempts will go near my target.  Now I can work on accuracy.

Xy747-that is awesome!

I started at 40% accuracy too. That is very decent actually. You could stop there or try for 50% just because you are so close.

I am guessing the heavier juggling balls help. At least for me, the tennis balls feel too light, but the Twin Loop slings makes tennis balls feel 10% heavier and that really helped me be accurate.  This video shows the accuracy:

I found I have to not throw hard to be accurate. But once it “clicked” for me, now I can throw any ball with the same accuracy….as long as I don’t try to throw hard. Plastic whiffle golf balls that weigh nothing are still on target with easy throws:

Bandit,

I want to increase my accuracy.  Throwing with a sling feels like a superpower.  I might start exploring using other slings as I get better.

One thing I can recommend is throw more balls per data set. For example, instead of most hits out of 5 throws, try most hits out of 20 throws. By using a larger data set you capture “streaks” of hits better AND individual misses are not as costly (each miss in 5 throws cost you 20%……in 20 throws a miss only cost you 5%).

Also another thing that really helped me was to occasionally change the distance. I recommend throw 5 balls at 5 yards. If you hit the target once, then back up to 10 yards and throw 5 more balls. If you hit the target once at 10 yards then backup to 15 yards….else move closer back to throwing from 5 yards. Just repeat this idea to see how far away you can get.

One thing I will recommend after nearly 20 years of slinging... change it up. Change up your throwing technique, change up the distance, change your ammo.  You need to train your brain to be able to handle lots of different scenarios. When it can interpolate what it needs to do from all of those different scenarios you've exposed it to, it is better at getting closer to the exact motions that it needs to do.  This is what I've found in the last 5 years or so. For about 12 years prior, I only did 1 method, one type of ammo. I figured enough reps and time would train my brain. But that's not how the brain works. Repetition is good, but exposing your brain to more situations will make you learn so much faster. Studies have been done about how randomizing training can help your brain adapt faster and with more precision than from structured, unchanging practice. There was a post and a conversation about it here a few years ago but I can't find the post.

When you do switch things up, I wouldn't suggest doing it every throw, but do it in sets. Use one sling for a while, then change lengths. Switch from baseballs to tennis balls, light stones to heavy stones, etc. I really feel this has helped me improve more than all the repetition of a single technique I did for over a decade.

I totally agree with IronGoober, just a creative approach and regular practice.  The only way to understand your level of accuracy is through sports with commonly accepted targets. Make a standard Balearic target out of any material-it's not difficult. And throw the series the same way they throw at competitions.  Distances of 15 and 20 meters on the Quadro-120x120 target (1 point-15 meters)+50 cm-Diana (2 points). Keep statistics and compare your results with the tournament results, which are publicly available. This way you can compare and track your throwing level. One-time successful and unsuccessful series do not show the real level of throwing-this is all a case. Stability is when you make, for example, 10 sets of 5 balls and can repeat this result regularly. And it will be even more exciting than just experimenting without counting your hits. Good luck with your training, you will definitely succeed.

Bandit,Iron, Snow,

Great ideas.  I’ll define try switching up the distance and accuracy.  The record keeping is definitely something important for tracking progress.

Thank you, guys for your ideas.  You have my wheels turning.

This 100%!

Here's a video on the concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_5nWKyRzKM.

Joe, this is a great video, thanks!! I noticed that those guys who regularly played with us in the Ancient battle "ASB" mastered the sling faster. Unlike those who boiled in their own juice. That is, static monotonous throwing develops an intuitive feeling more slowly. In ASB, we are constantly moving, throwing at each other and simultaneously dodging balls flying at us.
All the guys who play ASB with us quickly learn different throwing styles and use them intuitively, depending on the situation on the field of play.

When they come to static target tournaments, they also confidently show good throwing.

I think anyone who doesn't have the opportunity to get together and play ASB can just practice throwing in different styles and in motion. This will greatly help you learn different throwing styles faster and your body will begin to work intuitively, much like an experienced driver driving a car without thinking.

This is what our ASB training looks like. In the video, half of the guys are throwing from a sling quite recently.

Cool video.  I feel like I should be doing more block throwing, but I get too bored.  So I walk with my dog and sling against various targets along the way. I thought I was lazy but I was doing more reading and planning with my doing.

But you do need to do block practice when you are first learning the technique.
