I wonder if I can use the sling to start a sling golf game.  Use the same course as a frisbee golf course and sling tennis balls at it.  Use the same scoring rules as golf.

It's quite fun. Even with just a tennis ball on a DG course. I count any metal hit the same as getting it into the basket.  It's surprisingly difficult in hilly terrain. The dang ball just wants to roll away despite best efforts to make it stay close to the basket. It would be great combination if high scores were a good thing in golf.

Thanks for validating my thoughts.  Now, I just need to find someone else who slings tennis balls in my area.

Extra weight seems to help me too. If you have been following the discussion about the Twin Loop sling I made, it has proven to be more accurate with a tighter grouping for me because the extra pouch weight makes the tennis ball seem heavier.

Of course that was by accident!  Was just trying to make a sling to better fit tennis balls so I could not fiddle with the pouch loading them.

Good to be lucky!

Well, I found another body tweak.  In the end, slinging is a whole body movement.  As you find one body movement to tweak, you find another that needs adjusting.    Undecided

I have to consciously adjust my throws to move the trajectory to the right.

A few days ago I threw some tennis balls at a target by hand, which I do very rarely, because I normally use a sling since I learned slinging. It was really funny, because I consistantly threw high right  Smiley. I had to aim low left to hit where I wanted. So maybe just don´t think too much about it. Your body will make some corrections even if you do not pay attention to it.

You're not wrong.  So much of one's body is involved with the throw, so one can over do the thinking.   I do find that as in golf, finding body feel references can help develope a consistent throw.  I noticed now that I need more discipline with starting in a bladed stance.  I generated consistently straight throws in today's session.

Xy747: so cool to follow along with your learning process!

Figure 8 was by far the hardest, or at least most time consuming, style for me to learn. Seemed so “weird”…. As in, kind of like throwing normally by hand except timing was all off and so unforgiving to “shortcuts” in the windup.

But now that I got it down, literally feels the most natural to throw of all styles I use.

Part of my problem was my slings did not hold the tennis balls well too. So any error in technique made the ball fly out randomly. But my Twin Loop sling holds so much better I think I can throw with sloppy technique sometimes.  Not really sure that is completely true (sling is not magic!), but it does seem the sling is helpful.

Let me know if you want to try a Twin Loop sling and I will send you one

It is said that for this reason, in the Balearic Islands, when throwing stones, only a horizontal throw with a preliminary spin is allowed. And throws in the "eight" style are allowed only when throwing balls. Is it so interesting to hear from the guys who were at the World Championships in the Balearic Islands and participated in competitions in throwing stones, not balls?

Hi Bandit,

It is good to know that eventually I should be able to feel this figure 8 throw as natural.   I just got back from visiting family, so it has been a week since I’ve thrown.  We’ll see what I can do later today.

Eventually, I would like to try your sling.  I think for the moment, I will continue with my cut-down version of the cheap Amazon sling.   I had enough trouble getting to my current level of proficiency, that I don’t want to confuse myself with different lengths and styles of sling.  Though, my current one will need new cordage pretty soon.

I'm very new to all this, and figure-8 seems like the hardest style, so of course that's where I started (I did not know it was the hardest at the time). While every body movement needs to click, for me everything was secondary to getting my damn throwing arm all the way back instead of nearly swinging around my head.

xy747, you mentioned earlier you had ChatGPT analyze your throws? Tell me more? That sounds super interesting.

Bandit,

Do you have recommendations on what paracord brand to use for slings?  Does it make a difference ?

Rhodophyta,

Yeah, all I did was ask ChatGPT how I can improve my throws after I described in detail my approach to slinging.  I told it that I was aiming at my target.  ChatGPT suggested that I aim for release windows that are in front of me.  Kinda like how  artillery aim indirect fire.  This would allow me to be more consistent.

I was in contact with Pep about this and other things. If I recall correctly, only pirouette is not allowed, everything else us fine. One can even bring their own projectiles.
I think it's the more traditional competitions on Majorca and mainland Spain where things are stricter.

I don't mean to tread on any toes, but LLMs are hit and miss with mainstream topics and more than dubious at best when it comes to niche things like slinging. There is a sparcity of written material on slinging rarely found in other hobbies, therefore anything Slinging related has a very high chance of being either completely hallucinated or comprised of posts here in the forum taken out of context.

In my experience, the release (and aiming) is an unconcious action, just as one doesn't conciously decide when to release a ball when throwing. Iron goober has some good videos on aiming adjustment. Either in the videos or here somewhere is discussed that starting the power stroke earlier/later or adjusting the angle of the body relative to the target can serve to adjust the aiming direction. Fine tuning aim is a matter of practice with consistent ranges, targets and projectiles.

You are welcome to join one of the slinging Discord servers as well (if you haven't already), there we can take a look at your slinging technique (vids, pics etc) and perhaps give some pointers.

No recommendation-I just bought the cheapest 550 paracord on Amazon!

But do note there are different types of paracord. Basically stronger paracord is larger in diameter and stiffer.

The most common type of paracord is 550 which is supposed to be good for 550 lbs loading. I use 550 paracord for my single cord slings just because 550 is the most common type….not because I think you need the entire 550 lbs breaking strength.

To save weight some people “gut” the 550 paracord by removing the inner strands (they pull right out as the inner strands are not connected to the outer “shell”….under load, the outer shell stretches, which shrinks its diameter, which causes it to grip the inner strands….this absorbs the shock of the loading as is needed in parachutes).  Obviously if you gut the paracord it is not as strong.

Likewise some people use 275 paracord for a lighter pouch or, because it is smaller in diameter, for a smaller, tighter weave if you are making a multi-strand braided sling.

So there are some options to think about. Or just buy the cheapest thing you can find like me!

I will point out black is generally the cheapest paracord color….but black is the hardest to see when tying knots! So you might want to think about your color choice.
