Goalpost: An open-field warm-up for all skill levels (tennis balls)
Apr 13th, 2026 at 10:13am

Title: Goalpost

Description: An open-field warm-up for all skill levels that uses tennis balls as projectiles

Requirements: Open Field, Sling, 3 tennis balls

Steps:
1. Throw ball one as far as possible into/across the field.
2. Throw ball two as close to ball one as possible
3. Throw ball three through the gap between one and two

Assessments:
1. How am I doing today?
Divide successes by the total number of throws to get a fraction. If this fraction is higher than is typical then you are doing doing well relative to your skill level.

2. How am I progressing overall?
Measure the number of full strides between the furthest two balls. This provides a metric that can be tracked overtime for logging progress.

Note:
This activity is self-adjusting in difficulty. The closer you can get the first two balls, the more difficult it will be to successfully get the third through the 'goalpost'.

I tried to make a target and play golf sling. The target is too small. To make it more interesting, you need to make it 3-4 times larger. I shot a video about a golf sling 5 years ago. If you're interested..I'll search on my computer and send you a video.

Oh I like this idea! I don't have a ton of open fields near me to use, but this will definitely go on my list for when I'm traveling or out with friends.

Self-adjusting difficulty is a great feature for any skill game like this. And no equipment required(other than the sling and ammo) makes for a real easy setup.

Even if you have limited space you could still play this - albeit without the distance/power slinging aspect. Might be analogous to putting instead of driving Grin

I'd love to see the video. Cool target setup.

Thank you!
And i have the opposite problem; the only places I can throw are the baseball and football fields around me. The city i live in is also notorious for people calling the police on you for dumb things... you know like slinging rocks and such  Grin

Yeah...I know this problem. All the Karens love to talk about having great public areas for everyone to use - until someone uses it for something other than their sport Grin

Golf Sling. archive 2022. Target development.
This video is on my YouTube channel. I'm transferring it at the request of friends of slingers who, like me, do not have access to YouTube. The task was to make targets that would delay the ball. During the testing process, it became clear that the target must be large and wind-resistant. And that's why the grid option is the most convenient. Such targets are easy to transport and install. The disadvantage of such targets is that they take a long time to weave and ropes are quite expensive)). Of course, you can just do with a tall rod with a flag in the center of the pit. But with the target in the center, it's still more interesting to play.
