Sling reviews and recommendations
Mar 16th, 2026 at 11:00pm

I've been thinking about creating a topic like this for a long time.  The biggest problem was where to put it.  I think this board is the best option.  This is where people should be (when on this forum) if they're looking for a sling.  So a list of recommendations seems perfect.  This most recent post that revived the idea was this one started by Rhonan: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1772030425.

I think it will be good to leave this pretty open as to what can be posted.  Feel free to link videos, written descriptions and pics, etc.  However you want to provide some info to give people an idea about the sling.  Although please give us more than 'I got a sling from this guy and I like it'.  Grin

I don't think it makes sense to define a rating system (such as rating aspects of the sling on a scale of 1 - 10).  I think that's too subjective unless we plan out specific tests for ratings (which is too hard).  That said, if you want to use your own general rating system, go for it.

Also feel free to shout out sling makers.  Although in that scenario, please still be focusing on a particular sling.  What I would like this topic to cover is slings that someone actually owns and has used, not just a giant list of sling manufacturers.

Also, if you are a sling maker, no posting your own stuff. Wink
That's what the Market Place is for.  Start a new topic and show us what you got.

Whenever someone posts a review or recommendation, I'll (try to) link things in this first post.  Hopefully that will work like a table of contents and some can get to a particular review quickly.

Maker: IronGoober.
Date of acquisition: spring of 2024

Length, weight:
~65cm, 40g (flax sling),
~55cm, 30g (polysteel sling)

Acquisition:
I had discovered the r/slinging subreddit and uploaded photos of some old slings of mine with a question regarding buying balearic slings. IronGoober generously agreed to send me a balearic sling as part of a sling trade. These are the slings he sent me.

Methods and materials:
The longer one is made of Cordyline Australis (New Zealand flax) fibers, with leather sewn on the inside of the pouch, and dyneema threads spliced into the release end. I know IronGoober sources and processes the natural fibers from the raw plant growing in his part of the world.
The shorter one is fully polysteel, with a leather Acro-tab sewn onto the release end.

Thoughts:
Just to preface this. I have not had a slinging session in which I have not used the flax sling. It is the gold standard to which I compare any new sling I make or acquire.
The natural fibers have a bit of a coarse feel on the fingers, which I have grown to really enjoy. In combination with the sewn leather, they provide satisfying creaking sounds as the sling is stretched, and extra grip on the release end. At first I was afraid the coarse fibers would cause blisters on my fingers (😉), but this has not been the case. The finger-loop provides enough room around my finger to prevent this.
The pouch is big enough to comfortably hold tennis balls and various sizes of rocks. I have comfortably thrown readyman sling bullets, and much smaller forged steel bullets sent to me by James Woods. These are the smallest sized projectiles I would dare put in the pouch. I avoid using too small projectiles since the stiffness of the pouch prevents it from wrapping around a small bullet.
The spliced dyneema release end was a point of worry at first. The spliced section looked short and I was afraid the dyneema would pull out of the flax release cord. This has not been the case. The spliced part is tightly braided, looks almost unchanged since I received the sling, and I use it without giving it a second thought.

The shorter, polysteel sling does not see as much use as the longer one, simply due to me preferring a longer sling.
The sling has a leather Acro-tab sewn into the release end. The leather is thick and soft and provides more than enough friction for safe and comfortable use. The experience of using this sling inspired me to put a button on my netted slings.
The polysteel pouch is noticably more slippery than the leather pouch on the flax sling, and I have to be a bit more careful as I set the projectile before the throw.
The cords are surprisingly flat, which I have later learned is an intentional modification IronGoober achieves by flattening the braid with a hammer.
The sling is snappy and beginner friendly, and I always give it to people I teach slinging for the first time. The Acro-tab is intuitive and well made.

These slings are durable, comfortable, reliable, and an absolute joy to use. They are what got me back into slinging, and what eventually made me develop the netted slings. I consider them a very dear personal treasure.

P.S. Joe, is this an acceptable format for the reviews and recommendations thread? It kinda got away from me.

That's great man!  Perfect!  And an excellent choice to start things off. Thumbs Up

I'll add that I also have a sling from Goober.  I reference it all the time in videos because it's been my go-to sling for tennis balls for years.  His slings are fantastic!

It's also worth noting that he doesn't sell them commercially (to my knowledge).  So if anyone wants one, you'll have to message him and set up a deal.

Maker: Hilltop Hurler
Shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/HilltopHurler

Model: Premium Handwoven Hemp Balearic Sling
Material: Hemp with Dacron tail
Length: ~22.5 inches
Weight: 50g

This model isn't often seen on Hilltop's store.  At least not when I've looked.  I saw it at one point in time and wanted it, but it was purchased by someone else and I didn't see it again.  After keeping an eye on his Etsy shop for a while, I reached out to him and asked him to give me a heads up the next time he was going to have one available.  Which he kindly did.

This sling is a bit shorter than I normally use.  I tend to use a sling in the area of 26-27 inches.  But I love this sling.  I don't use any other Balearic slings of this size.  I have other Balearic slings (from Spain) in the 22-24 inch range but they just don't work for for me.  This one was meshing with me pretty much instantly.

I haven't used any other style slings from HH, but wouldn't hesitate for a second to try one out.  I love this sling, and I also highly recommend him as a sling maker and seller in general.

I did a demo video with this sling a while back.  This was the very first use: https://youtu.be/T6G4bI3DQMo.

Maker: kairo/fechtbruder
Shop: none that I know of

Model: Cotton balearic sling
Material: cotton braid, soaked in wax, with nylon (i think) cracker
Length, weight: ~60cm, 47g

This is the result of the only sling trade I actually openly requested. The gorgeous craftsmanship of the sling is only rivalled by the immense mistake I made in communicating the trade.

The craftsmanship:
The sling is made of luxurious cotton thread, immaculately braided in a perfectly even braid. The braid is dense, hard and very tight. I was given the opportunity to choose the colors, and I opted for my favorite combination, teal/tourquioise and yellow/ochre. The colors turned out far better than any reservations I had had. It's just a joy to pass through your fingers and gawk at the dense braid and vibrant colors. There is a slight clockwise twist to the entire sling, which I assume is due to the raw thread being factory twisted before braiding. I haven't used the sling enough to fully break it in, and I assume more use would help with the twist. The twist is noticeable when loading the pouch.
The loop is soft to the fingers and firm, I assume due to the soft cotton fabric.
The pouch is perfectly even and large enough for a variety of projectiles. I would not use too small projectiles due to the thin braids, the stiffness of the pouch, and the aforementioned slight twist. Tennis balls work perfectly.
The release end is formed into a seamless loop. How he does that I have no idea. It's some sort of magic fairy dust combined with sacrifices to the cotton gods. It's flawless. He had asked me whether I wanted a loop or a stopper knot, my fingers must have just instincitively typed “Yes!”. The loop is just a thing of luxury, and I feel spoiled that I have it.
The cracker is a substantial piece of, I think, nylon, passed through the release loop, and twisted. Other than a single slightly pulled out strand (I probably snagged the cracker on something at some point), the cracker is perfect and shows very little signs of wear. From what I have seen I believe it will never have to be replaced. Even so, replacement would be trivial due to the aforementioned loop.
Kairo also sent me the belt holster for the sling. I have not worn it outside, but I sure have strutted with it on my belt at home many-a-time. It has two belt straps on the back, and a simple looped strap mechanism to close it. It all just works. When rolled into a spiral, the sling fits like a glove inside. I personally like letting the cracker hang outside as a sort of decorative tassel. Kairo didn't tell me he would send the holster, but I would have requested it had I known he could. It's perfect for the sling.

The mistake:
This sling was a learning experience.
Pay attention: Lay off the custom requests, and let the maker make you the sling that's perfect for THEM!
Otherwise you're pushing the maker into dimensions and shapes he's not used to, which breeds mistakes, and reducing the experience you could be getting trying new shapes and dimensions of slings.
I should have let kairo make me a palm hold sling like he normally makes, of the length he normally makes, but instead I asked for a shorter release cord to pinch just the loop/cracker. This pushed kairo into a measurement mistake which shortened the entire sling, and my smart-ass loop/cracker pinch ended up being worse than if I had used a palm hold.
The result is a sling that's a bit too short for my taste, with an unpleasant hold, and a cautionary tale I'm reminded of every time I use it.

In short: Kairo's slings are a thing of beauty and luxury. Treat yourself to one of his slings if given the opportunity, and let the man work his magic.

Kairo, my man, I'm open for a rework, this time on your terms. I just hope you still have enough yellow and blue cotton thread.

Seller: Parallel Halo (Amazon seller)
Shop: https://www.amazon.com/s?srs=19838093011&rh=p_89%3AParallel%2BHalo

Models: Various leather pouch slings
Material: Leather pouch w/ paracord cords

Here's one that might be thought a bit unusual for a recommendation.  But this has a specific target audience.  We had a new member sign-up fairly recently.  Just a guy getting started with slinging.  In our email communication, he asked about getting a basic starter sling.  I sent him some info on making a simple leather pouch sling, but he was more interested in just purchasing a low priced one to get started as he learned how to do things.  I directed him to this Amazon seller.

One of the guys from Parallel Halo (not sure if he's the owner or not) is a member here on the forum.  I've had some interaction with him and reviewed some slings.  A really nice guy to work with.

These slings aren't anything different than what most of us could throw together in a few minutes.  A simple leather pouch, the holes for the cords secured with a grommet, and paracord cords (one in the picture is replaced with kevlar).  But they're really solid if someone is just starting out, and wants to get something to sling some tennis balls around.  They're pretty inexpensive too.  At $12 - $14, a person could easily spend that on a piece of leather and a couple tools to work it.

Now I'm not dissuading anyone from making their own sling.  Slings like this are very easy and quick to make.  You can also start with basically any material and cordage.  But if you're starting out and want a simple sling that's going to work well, this is a good starting point.
