Hello from North Florida
Dec 30th, 2025 at 8:49am

Howdy from Tallahassee, folks. My name is Justin. I’m a 32yr old husband and father of 3 small children. I’m brand new to slinging and looking to get more involved. I’ve made a few basic slings from 550 paracord but I’m really hoping to learn a lot more rope and knot work to make something really top quality. I’d really like to be able to make slings that are super easy for small children to use too as my 2 sons are 4 and 3 yrs old.

I received a 27” Pan sling for Christmas and it’s beautiful. I love it and I’m super glad to have it but it doesn’t lessen my desire to learn to make my own top quality slings eventually. Any and all advice is welcomed and wanted.

Which forum is that and how do I get there? I’m not really familiar with how to navigate this place yet.

On this forum. Periodically, the guys hold various contests and games with a sling. Participate is about practice and communication. And it's fun. Good luck!!

Thank you, friend. I appreciate your help. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to interact with this forum. But being having a wife and 3 very small children may restrict my ability to do so  Grin (in a joyous way, of course)

Hi Justin,

my 4 year old girl learned to sling by starting with a foxtail made out of a tennis ball and barrier tape. Now she is really good with the underhand throw (half of the tennis balls in the neighbours garden are from her throws  Smiley).

The most important features of her sling are the colors she likes.

For children, I made this kind of children's shooting range with a sling. The sling was made with large baskets, under large and soft balls of soft cloth. It's safe and a lot of fun. You can even build a town out of boxes like in the game Angry Birds

I make such bright slings for small children, they really like them. To make it easier for them to throw light projectiles, I weave heavier slings, then even the lightest projectile from them flies well, but not far))

Dude, those are all such great ideas! Thank you so much! I’ll have to try some of those! It looks like your rope work skills are far beyond mine at this point.

My 4yr old son actually just slung a tiny rock through our minivan’s rear window the day after Christmas  Grin

It is dangerous for beginners to give stones right away. It's better to start throwing something soft. Excellent soft balls are obtained if they are made from remnants of fabric that can be put inside old socks)) I hope the glass withstood the blow of little David. Here's a kid throwing soft fabric balls at our outdoor shooting range.

Oh, I didn’t give him the stones. He grabbed it from our driveway while I was getting his little brother ready to leave. I gave him tennis balls. And no, the glass did not survive.  Grin It shattered the entire window Grin But no worries. Insurance handled it after a small deductible. SafeLite came out and replaced it two days later.

Glad to be here and finally joining the community. I’ve been quietly reading and learning for a while, and it feels great to jump in. I’ve always been interested in hands-on crafts, materials, and learning things the right way—from the basics to more refined techniques.

I first came to the USA back in 2010, and over the years I’ve spent a lot of time exploring craft stores and learning through trial and error. I still remember shopping at Joann Fabric for supplies; when I later found out the brand had closed many locations, it honestly made me a bit sad. It felt like the end of an era for a lot of makers and DIY folks.

I’m here to learn more, exchange ideas, and hopefully contribute something useful as I go. Looking forward to learning from all of you and being part of the discussions.

Thanks for having me!
