Interest in a video editing tutorial?
Dec 5th, 2025 at 10:46pm

I've been thinking about doing a tutorial on video editing.  I'm curious if that would be helpful to anyone.  The intent would be to help any slingers who would like to put videos up on YouTube (or wherever) but aren't sure how to get started with editing.  I use a free program called Shotcut.  It's pretty easy to use once you learn your way around it.  I'm not thinking of anything too complex.  I'd probably use one of my Online Slinging Competition entries as the example.

It would take a bit of time to put that together, so I don't want to bother if it's not needed.  If there is interest in something like that, let me know.

Yes it would!

Overlay the same video with a zoomed image is one I figure out how to do but always forget how and have to look it up. It's be nice to have a quick reference guide for some of those things.

It will be a useful video. I also think it will be useful to show in this video how to change and save a photo or an image of a convenient size. Tell us how to change the format from centimeters to pixels.

Oh yeah for sure! I've been meaning to post asking about this for a while. I figured out a decent process for the online slinging competition with Adobe Express, but it takes me a solid 20 minutes each time so I was curious if others have a faster way.

I'll check out shotcut too, somehow I never ran across that one in all my free video editing tool research.

Adobe is great for little stuff, but has a 5GB limit because it's a free cloud service. For longer videos like the pumpking or egg challenge I've been using OpenShot which is also free, but limited to true video editing like cutting together clips, cropping, resizing, speed, etc. It's great for anything like that, but doesn't have anything built in for additions/annotations like text overlay for scorekeeping.

Cool.  Okay, I'll start planning things out.  It's going to be a little while to get the video together, but it should be a fun project.

I probably won't cover image resizing.  Things can be resized directly in the video editor.  We also have some basic Windows and Mac instructions posted here for image adjustments: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1676672557.

Just checked out shotcut and dang this is way better! Definitely going to use this instead of adobe express.

It looks like it is missing some features(e.g. video speed adjustments without dropping frames) that OpenShot has, so I guess depending on the project I can swap between them.

But for the weekly online slinging videos, this is way better. Being able to save text templates with placement/font size is a huge time saver.

Still interested in the tutorial to see how you do things! I'm only just starting to learn shotcut but I feel like it could go pretty deep.

Cool man! Thumbs Up

I haven't started that video yet, but it won't be too much longer.  I was planning to record another one before it, but weather didn't cooperate.

Was it me that suggested ShotCut to you Joe or the other way round? Either way, I love ShotCut. There are better programs but I have yet to find a better one that is as intuitive and free.

I don't actually remember.  I remember checking out a few free editors before landing on Shotcut.  But I don't recall if that came from you or if I found it when searching online.  As you said, all good either way.  It's definitely not a program I'll stop using until my channel is monetized and getting regular sponsors so I can pay for something.  So maybe in another couple decades. Grin

And an update on the tutorial, I haven't done any recording yet.  I did put together a list of the topics I want to cover.  So things are in early stages of progress.  I don't have a timeline but will definitely have something before the end of January.
