How Toys Have Changed
Oct 6th, 2025 at 4:24pm

I am jealous of kids today.  They have eBikes and eScooters, Xboxes, drones, remote control planes, etc., etc.  Back in the day our parents gave us a potato and a spring to play with.  For real!

I don't pay too much attention to what kids are playing with nowadays.  I think the simple stuff had it's advantages though.  It helps develop creative thinking and imagination.  I couldn't even begin to count how many uses a simple stick had when growing up.  Dozens and dozens.  I wonder if kids still play with sticks in the present time.  If they don't, they should.

Agreed.  Our imaginations were all we had.  That was a good thing.

We were also given a small blob of putty to play with. Silly Putty.

We didn't mind being given a spring, potato, or blob of putty to play with. We had nothing better so we actually liked these low tech toys.  Hard to imagine now.

our primitive toys: sticks, stones, ropes helped us to invent and develop creatively and not to retreat from difficulties, but to solve problems. Alas, modern children immediately give up at the first setback. I bring a lot of simple things to school.:spinning sticks, flower sticks for balancing, slings and balls, Chinese dragon ribbons, etc. but alas, they lose interest at the first failur

I'm not particularly old but other than a metal tonka truck and later a bit of knex and lego I never had toys or gameboys growing up. Nothing beats mucking around outside or at least inventing things with lego and the like. If I wanted play-dough 4yo me had to make it himself from flour, salt and water

I can't imagine how the toys, phones and games the kids have thes days teach kids problem solving, improvisation, risk assessment, spatial skills  and whatnot.

Slightly related side-note: give us slingers a large enough ball of string and we'll be occupied for days if not weeks Grin

Of course, the sling comes first. But there are many other interesting and simple games for developing coordination and dexterity. If you have children and grandchildren, I recommend making these "flower sticks". There are a lot of lessons on YouTube and you'll learn them quickly. It's very easy to make them and it won't take much time. But believe me, it's very exciting and your children will be delighted. And they'll throw away their smartphones for a while Grin
