Pumpkin Challenge 2025
Sep 18th, 2025 at 8:57pm

The equinox is just around the corner, so let's get this post started!

I'm sure just about everyone here is familiar with the pumpkin challenge, but just in case the rules are always the same.  Use a sling and projectile of your choice to smash a pumpkin.  That's pretty much it.  If you're curious about past entries, scroll down through the topics in this board.  You'll see 'Pumpkin Challenge' listed a whole bunch of times.  Feel free to do whatever you want.  It's always awesome to see the range between skillful shots vs. things are more creative and entertaining.  Have some fun with it!

Let's go!  Cheesy

I've got an interesting idea for this year, although not totally sure if it's going to work out. We'll see!

I did the challenge, and it was really challenging  Smiley.
I wanted to hit the pumpkin with a stone and with a clay bullet, but I was not successful. I had 20 stones and 20 clay bullets with me. I missed  with all of them and had to change to apples instead. But I hit my second camera with a stone. I saved 1 minute of setup time by not using the stoneproof case I made. I regretted that very soon.

Oh man you really put it on hard mode with that tiny pumpkin! You had more than just a handful that looked like they grazed it on their way down range though, lots of good shots!

I'll say a prayer for your camera and make sure I have some extra armor on mine when I'm filming  Grin

300 fps (512x384 pixels)
600 fps (432x192 pixels)
1200 fps (336x96 pixels)

I used the 1200 fps setting in the pumpkin video. The camera is a 15 years old Casio Exilim EX-F1. I got it second hand for 50 bucks. It is not the best resolution at 1200 fps but what makes this camera special is, that you can not only record for a few seconds in highspeed mode, but as long as the memory card and battery allow. So it is absolutely no problem to record a full hour in 1200 fps mode (which is 40 hours when played back at 30 fps  Smiley.

Nice!  It looked like so many of your throws were right over the top.  Last year I used pumpkins that size as ammunition.  Grin
Definitely a small target!

I was surprised the pumpkin didn't have any damage with all that debris in the slow-mo.  I guess that was the glande exploding.

I threw apples when my stones and glandes were all gone. So it is an apple hitting a pumpkin.

Lol!  Yep, I see that now.

Having 1 or 2 too many drinks + watching slinging videos = missing important details.  Grin

Here's mine! Finally found some time on my last available weekend before going to Ibiza. Really didn't want it to wait until after.

I like the ammo test! Thumbs Up
They ended up looking like lead glandes.  They should have hit like lead glandes!  Grin

My video will definitely be after Ibiza.  I know what I'm going to try.  It's something I've never seen, but I have to build it.  And I'm not sure if it will even work.  We'll see in November.

Yeah, I tried to model them after the various glande shapes and width/length ratios I've seen around, but also fit them to the size of the blanks I had without wasting too much material. Since wood isn't very dense, I tried to salvage as much material as I could so they didn't float around like kites.

I intentionally made some of them longer and spiky even though I knew it was going to make them incredibly unstable hoping they'd make for some fun stabs, but alas.

You might say they were more like a lead ballon than lead glandes Grin
