Hi from Florida
Apr 22nd, 2025 at 3:49pm

Hi! I hope this isn't seen as spam; I was a user on here a long time ago but I lost my account and can't log in through it so I set one up from Gmail. My old one was with Hotmail and I'm locked out of it. I remember my email but not my password. It was one of the below two:
Kellyleighcrutcher@hotmail.com or kelly_leigh_crutcher@hotmail.com.

I want to learn how to use a sling now because I have two furbabies (spoiled rotten Pomeranians) and I'm terrified that they could have a run in with a coyote. I thought about a pellet gun but my family doesn't want me learning how to handle guns because I used to have a seizure condition when I was younger. I just want to keep my puppies safe.

We've had coyotes running loose at night in the neighborhood; I never let the puppies go out without me but I still worry.

Welcome from Pennsylvania!

It's definitely scary to have coyotes around with pets.

Also, I do see your old account.  It's under the second email address you listed.  With the old account, we can update the email address, password, or anything else if you want to get back into it.  Just et me know.  Or it's fine if you just want to continue using the new one.

Slings are great fun, but for protection of your pups, a slingshot (rubber-band powered) might be a better option.

That being said, we'd love to help you learn to sling any way we can. There are some decent how to videos from some of our members on YT.

Search for 'david morningstar' and 'archaic arms'. they both have good tutorials.

Would a sling be a good way to take out cockroaches at a distance? I know this is hard (moving target) but they've been my worst phobia since I was four years old.
Normally I panic and run when I see one of them but there might come a time when I'd have to kill one of them outside. I ran into a nest of the things when I was younger and helping move a stack of cement blocks from one place to another on our back porch; I've never forgotten it.

No.  I don't know if you've done any slinging yet, but a sling is the most difficult weapon in the world to be accurate with.  This is easily shown by people who have been doing it for years and can still miss a 4 foot target that's only 13 meters away.  When you start adding things like a very small target size or a target in motion, the difficulty is increased exponentially.  Ironically that's why there are those of us who love it so much.

You can try whatever you want, assuming it's being done in a safe and legal way.  But whether it's coyotes or cockroaches, a sling isn't ever going to be a good option for pest control.  There will absolutely always be a better choice.

I was wanting to learn how to do it recreationally but the (dumb) idea came to me that I might be able to use it for other reasons too.

There are several examples here of members making shotgun slings that launch multiple projectiles.  In that cockroaches are soft and easy to kill perhaps this would be the best way to go.  I would try a sling with a big pouch and shoot a handful of gravel.  But there are certainly more efficient ways to kill roaches.

Sorry I had a brain fart when I put that; ran into one of what I call the "spawn of Satan" earlier that day, freaked and ran the opposite direction. I was still traumatized.

I do have a lot of palm trees around my area. Would what I call "dried palm beans" be a good thing for ammunition? Or would they be too little?

There's only one way to find out.
