Cool. After thinking about it for a while, I've kind of accepted how the slinging is likely to be portrayed. It basically came down to the way other weapons are shown. If you look at swords, bows, guns, whatever, the way people use them in movies is very rarely how it would be (or has been) done in real life. Why wouldn't slings get the same treatment?!
I'm not watching the show, but that's just because I don't have Prime. Maybe I'll catch it if it's put on Blu-ray or something after a little while.

The throw (gif) you attached is fine. The initial rotation behind the back is just flair. After that he brings it to the front in an underhand rotation, and then into an underhand or sidearm release. They kind of chopped out the actual release when they cut from one point of view to the other. But yeah, that throw totally works.
