Strangest Thing You Ever Saw
Feb 9th, 2025 at 1:08pm

I posted this story once before here but it was a while ago and we have many new members.  So....
It was 1956.  I was two.  I was on the front porch with my older brothers and sisters.  Thunderstorms were approaching and we were counting the time from flash to boom to judge the distance.  Approximately every seven seconds equals a mile.
Suddenly over the front woods a glowing orb appeared.  It looked like an extra sun, only not quite as bright.  It was gently bouncing over the treetops like a balloon.  We were dumbfounded.  We had no idea.  As it peacefully bounced over the treetops apparently with the wind it had us hypnotized.
It slowly drifted closer. It approached a big, gnarly old Pine Tree directly across the street from our house.  It softly touched the top of the tree then KABOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!  It was like an atom bomb going off.  As it blew the top of the poor old tree to smithereens the shock wave rocked the whole house.  We all ran for our lives deeper into the house.
Eventually we figured out that we witnessed ball lightning.  It's an extremely rare phenomenon.   Up until the advent of cell phone cameras there were only a handful of pictures of ball lightning in existence.  I guess we were lucky to see such a thing but it sure scared the poop out of us.
The image below sort of looks like what we saw.
So have you ever seen anything off the wall?

That reminds me of an event my mother says she saw when I was really young, some six months old or so in our house in Utah - which we moved out of when I was eight or nine months old or thereabouts, so I have no recollection of this. She says that she was holding me one evening when suddenly a vivid and bright rainbow-coloured ball of light softly floated into the room, about the size of a grapefruit, stopped a few inches from my head, and faded away. She had no clue what it was but remained calm (and awestruck).

Nothing like that has happened since.

But for something I personally saw: It was one Sunday morning on our way back from church when I was six or seven, we were driving along the local rural roads and passed some oaks to our right which gave way to a large clearing, and I saw two or three people in high-visibility vests and hardhats standing around a ribbon of purple lightning that went up out of sight.

It did not disappear but just... Stood there. It moved, but it neither disappeared nor made any noise. Nobody else in the car saw it. I didn't say anything as I was at the age where simultaneously nothing really surprised me but I still had childlike wonder, so I just thought something like "ok so that's something lightning can do, that's cool"

But of course now that I'm older, I know lightning shouldn't do that, so I haven't the faintest clue what I saw. I really want to say it was a dream as that's the most logical explanation, but I cannot truthfully say that because everything else that day that followed and preceded the lightning thing went on like normal. Another odd thing is that the clearing was so familiar and so present - like I feel that I can place it on a map, but I do not know where it was or if that clearing even existed, and have never seen that clearing again.

For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will bring distress on them, that they may feel it.”

Rat man, what you probably saw was ball lightning. It occurs sometimes during thunderstorms. It's low to the ground, and can occur in a variety of colors. Scientists have no explanation for it.

The greatest of all the accomplishments of 20th cent. science has been the discovery of human ignorance  The main difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limits.-Einstein   I'm getting psychic as I get older. Or is that psychotic?
