Hello Everyone
Jan 15th, 2025 at 5:39am

Hello everyone,

My name is Michael, I'm 30 years old, and I live in Adelaide, Australia. I became interested in slinging after reading about it in the Bible. After researching it, I found that it's a simple yet surprisingly effective weapon, which also seems underrepresented in historical combat movies and underrated overall. In Australia, the list of regulated or illegal weapons seems to be growing by the year, but thankfully, the sling hasn't made it onto that list yet, and I hope it never does! I made the decision to sell my firearms in recent years due to all the fee's, rules and regulations that make it a very expensive and difficult to pursue hobby.

I'm also seeking hobbies that don’t involve technology, especially since I no longer play video games. I’m particularly drawn to slinging because of how fast and far you can throw stones with relative ease. It's a silent, inexpensive hobby that offers solitude and silence, which I think is beneficial in this busy, noisy and fast-paced world. I'm also interested in crafting some of my own slings and have already ordered some equipment and materials to do so. I'm excited to learn more and connect with others who share the same interest.

Cheers,
Michael

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” ... So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. (1 Samuel 17:45, 50 ESV)

If you find a tennis court or a backstop, slinging tennis balls against a wall so they bounce back is a really good way to get practice in. It took me a while to get used to the lightweight of a tennis ball, but once I did, I started getting in a lot more practice because finding a safe place to sling with stones is much harder than a safe place with tennis balls.

Thank you IronGoober. I'm a YouTube subscriber of yours so the idea of slinging tennis balls against a wall or net isn't foreign to me, I'm fairly certain I actually got the idea from you! Your videos are excellent.

There are some excellent enclosed cricket cages at the park nearest to me which is my usual spot. I have a bucket of tennis balls so I sling them all until the bucket is empty and then pick them all up and repeat which I've found to be fairly efficient. I even made target I can hang on the cage so I have something to focus on with my aim. See pictures below.

...

...

I'm also planning to set up a target range in my backyard under the alfresco with large hanging canvas tarp (3x3m) which I am planning to hook into ceiling hooks. This would give me two quick and convenient options of 8.5m or 16m target distance in the comfort of my own home.

Ooh! I like your wooden target. I have similar hooks for my folding balearic target. And thanks you for the kind words.

I will say, having a range in your backyard is much more conducive for practice than anything else. I had one for while, but took it down to make room for potted trees (plus I only had 14m max).  I do wish I had a full 20 at home, but since my brick wall is only about a 8 minute walk, I'll survive. Smiley

There are also plenty of Aussie slingers, but I'm not sure how many are in Adelaide. But I imagine if you aren't opposed to a few hour drive you could meet up with some fellow slingers pretty easily.

Thank you! That sounds great—if I continue practicing and improving my slinging skills, I might consider connecting with other slingers in Adelaide or nearby in the future.
