Commonly Held Misconceptions
Dec 22nd, 2024 at 7:55am

So this idea for a thread is taken from some recently made posts. It's totally different than a thread on urban legends because I used the word misconceptions instead.

So what are some commonly held urba....misconceptions you've seen in life that you assumed were true that ended up being false.

For me, and this is not medical advice, but it's the food pyramid. You guys remember the old food pyramid? You could hardly design a worse diet. Did you get your 11th serving of bread today? Honey? No? Maybe that's why you feel sick. Now shovel that Hawaiian roll down your gullet before you pass out from malnutrition.

All nonsense. Another one- eating fat makes you fat. Absolutely not. Eating sugar makes you fat. When I first went on the Paleo diet I was on multiple blood pressure meds and my labs were out of whack from eating the appropriately titled Standard American Diet. Otherwise known as SAD.

Within 3 months I was eating half a pack of bacon and 4 eggs for breakfast. A little veggies and a little fruit. No dairy, no added sugar.

Surprise, surprise with no other change in my routine I lost 40 pounds quickly. My blood pressure reverted to athlete levels (115/75) and I stopped all meds.

The doctors were telling me one thing but reality something completely different. Having known many doctors in my career I quickly chose to believe my own body.

Turns out eating pure sugar is bad whether it's straight from the bag or in the form of bread.

What are some of yours?

That people over 50 can't learn new skills - I say Slinging.

That people can't live a normal life after cancer - I say Bullcrap.

😁👍

My outlook on life is Aristotalean; on seeing an Acorn I see a potential oak tree rather than Plato's view that it is a failed copy.

Congrats on both especially the latter. The world is a better place with Zud in it. Although I am quite jealous of the rocks you have access to.

I've lived in a decent place for slinging stones but never like pebble beach like you have or the kind RM has everywhere. Must be like heaven.

Children learn quicker than adults. Absolutely not! I struggled to pick up any skill as a kid because it took so long to learn anything. Now learning new things is easy for me.

And about fat - I'm glad that's not true because it's delicious!

As kids we were taught that no one is above the law... that the law is exactly the same for the richest or the poorest person in America.  What a total load of crap that is!

Couldn't agree more.  I learned to sling after fifty and I am a survivor of both Colon and Prostate Cancer.
