Rat Man

Our older members, or what's left of them, will remember this. I was a kid in the 50s, 60s, into the early 70s. As I've mentioned many times, it was a very different world then. There were no cell phones, no computers, no internet, no DVDs, CD's, VCRs, instant replay, etc. For entertainment you had to watch what your local TV stations presented to you WHEN THEY PRESENTED IT. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing. It made for some great family time. Since there was no second chance to see whatever, the entire family would plan their time around being present for any show considered important. Snacks would be made ready in advance, and even bathroom time would sync with commercials. In my world there were two biggies that were shown once a year. The Wizard of Oz and Mary Martin's wonderful version of Peter Pan. For some reason you don't see that version of Peter Pan anymore. I don't know why. Perhaps it became politically incorrect because of its depiction of the Indians. I thought it was very favorable. They showed the Indians as being clever and as loyal, dependable friends. But I guess they pushed the "noble savage" thing too far. Anyway, when one of these shows came on it was great family time. In that we saw them only once a year these shows were a special treat. Now I can watch them ten times a day if I want. We'd all gather together and watch without interruption. It was like an extra holiday. With technology being what it is today it's pretty much impossible to appreciate just how special and bonding these times were to us. So much for a trip into the olden days that no one cares about.
