How to add a custom profile pic to your profile
May 29th, 2024 at 10:08pm

I don't know how many folks have noticed, but if you go into the settings of your profile and try to upload a custom profile picture, you'll get an error.  I let Chris know about this problem but haven't heard anything back yet.  There have been a couple forum members who have asked about this, so I have a work-around.

There are a few things to keep in mind for this process:
  • These instructions assume you want to store your image file on the forum. If you're storing the file somewhere else (which is fine) you just need the web address of the image and can jump to step 6 for updating your profile.
  • These instructions may be a little vague for certain things.  If you don't know how to do something, just ask.
  • These instructions were done in Chrome.  If you have a different browser, some menu selections might be worded a little differently.  Again, if you run into trouble, just let me know.
  • IMPORTANT:
Make sure the image you're going to use is sized down to around 100 pixels height and width.  It can be a little bigger, but the forum will shrink it down automatically and if the original is too big it will look like crap.  Resizing instructions can be found here: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1676672557.

And so here we go.

  1. The first thing to do is get a copy of your image file uploaded to the forum.  The best way I found to do this is use your Introduction topic.  So go find your Hello post in the Introductions board.
If you never created one, why?  Tell us who you are. Wink
  2. Click the Modify button on the first post.
  3. In the section to add attachments, add you profile pic and click Save.  You should see your image now attached to the post.  Here’s mine as an example: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1540327292
  4. Now we need the web address of that attached image.  Right click (or control click for Mac) on the attached picture and choose Open Image in New Tab.
  5. Go to that tab in your browser and you should see your picture.  The address bar at the top has the URL we need.  Select the address so it’s highlighted, right click on it, and choose Copy.
  6. Back in the forum tab, click on the User CP button at the top.
  7. On the left click on Profile, then click on Options.
  8. Enter your password and click Confirm Password.
  9. In the Personalized Picture section at the top, check the box to enter a a web address.  Then right click and Paste the URL that you copied in step 5.  You should see a preview of the image appear above.
  10. If everything looks okay, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes.
  11. Now go check one of your posts anywhere in the forum and see if your profile pic is showing.

And you should be all set! Cool

Perfect!  Glad to know someone was able to follow that.  It's not difficult, just a lot of stuff to explain with only words.

Once, Toivo and Eino were out hunting, and before setting out, Toivo told Eino to fire three shots in the air if he got lost, and Toivo would find him. Soon enough, Eino got lost, aimed his weapon up and prayed: "God, please let Toivo see my arrows!"
