Troubles with split pouch - beginner needs help
May 21st, 2024 at 8:14pm

Hi, I want and Im trying to make a sling, my first, using The sling moustachio guide for single string paracord, but I have big troubles already at The very beginning

When he finishes those both ends of poach he nicely divides the 2 strings on left side, 3 on right side. When Im at that point, its complete mess, third one under first one, one over another and hard to put it or unable to divide it in such way. What am I doing wrong?

Any other good YouTube or photo guides on single string paracord? I do not want to give up, no way, but I must do something wrong

Please, kindly help guys, either with another detailed guide, or step by step photo? Anything may help, thanks

I think The guide is very good, dont get me wrong, but me as a beginner, Im messing up something

Nice evening to everyone and thanks!

I had to do it wrong from the beginning, I think The pouch is ok, though far from good and I think too loose, Id need help to figure out the beginning, the loops on each side, I think thats what I really messed up. Possible to save it somehow or need to start from the scratch?

I also do not know where should be the TOP and where the belly of the sling, as mentioned.... My very first attempt, do excuse, if it sound silly. Im not very much familiar with knots, and would really need advice.

My English is not best, and sometimes he covers the string with his hands and I got lost, do not get me wrong, I think it is very good YouTube guide, but as mentioned, Im a beginner, not good English + need to learn knots.

Anyway, aby help with this is very much appreciated and I do have one more question, is there any good book on Sling, Slinging?

Thanks guys!

It looks fine to me. The only thing that will really make a split pouch sling not work well is if one side of the pouch is longer than the other. This looks ok to me.  Does it throw stuff?  I'd say it is a success.  Your slings will look more and more tidy with more practice, this is a good start!

Thanks a lot John, my firtst attempts, what I wanted to say and I also DM you, I dont have a problem to weave the pouch, maybe yet to recognize better how tight to pull the string and make it better, my problem is witch the finishing of the pouch, which direction put the strings....how to lead the string through the loop, while making the knot....simply details, but important, as I can clearly see the both ends on the 3 slings I did yesternight have the knots done wrong...be it the direction or the knot itself, Im slowly figuring down the issues as I watch the video over and over, but some steps I really cant see clearly on the video and that causes my mistakes....where is the belly of the pouch, he moves with the sling up and down and I have not good view of where and how he lead the string.

Thanks, its a compliment for me, I will work hard to improve!

Please, can You recommend any good books, either on slings, bolas, and knots used most in making this stuff?

I would really appreciate that!

I don't have great advice here. I think the best thing to do is to just disassemble what you've done and try it a different way from the way you did it, try two or three different ways and just see which works best. That is the best way to learn. Most people come up with slight variations of the same thing and they all end with a similar looking result.

Never be afraid to undo what you've done on a sling, you can always redo it. It is the best way to make sure that it looks good and remains functional. When I'm braiding a sling, I will unbraid a long way to fix a mistake or uneven spot. It is the only way it will get fixed, mistakes in weaving/braiding don't even themselves out to look good.

My advice is to just make more slings Smiley

Ok, after watching the video, I think I see where you got confused.

Terminology:
Warp - strand that goes lengthwise in a weave
Weft - strand that goes horizontal that must be passed back and forth through the warp (it is the strand you handle).

After you have finished the weave, let say on the right side of the pouch, you take the warp thread from the left side and pull it up so there is a small "U" or loop. Then you take the weft thread from the right side and pass it through the "U". If you leave it like this, weft thread can move around. So, the solution is to tie it in an overhand knot around the 'U". So, loop it around pass it through the "U" one more time, and then use the loop you just made to tie a knot.

Hopefully that helps.

I'm not sure which of these strands is the 'weft' strand, so I just showed it passing under both of them, but essentially, this is what you need to do.
