Best War Movie

What's the best war movie ever made?  There are many great ones.  Apocalypse Now is certainly one of the best movies of any genre, War or otherwise.  What are your choices?

I really liked the Deerhunter. Actually, I watched Apocolypse Now just yesterday, it is very good but the ending is a bit lost on me  Huh

Also, not a film but a series- Band of Brothers is some of the best TV out there.

Band of Brothers

I've still never seen this, but have heard but great things about it.  I need to grab a copy off ebay.  I ran a quick search and there are some really inexpensive ones available.

For the general question, the first one that comes to mind is Saving Private Ryan.  Some other honorable mentions: Full Metal Jacket, Courage Under Fire, and Crimson Tide.

Though gruesome, the Normandy landing at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan was one of the most brilliant scenes ever shot IMO.  It certainly gets your attention.
Heartbreak Ridge was very entertaining.   And though it was about a different type of war, Starship Troopers is a good SciFi action flick.

It's got some of the same team (Spielberg/Hanks) behind it as Saving Private Ryan, so there's similarities in that sense, but you get ~10 hours of it. The fact that it's based on a true story and you get interviews with the men themselves is something special. Enjoy it  Smiley

All Quiet on the Western Front (1979) is one of my favorites, especially after reading the book too.

I just started watching this one and I have to agree.

I've heard good things about it, I should see it sometime.

Once, Toivo and Eino were out hunting, and before setting out, Toivo told Eino to fire three shots in the air if he got lost, and Toivo would find him. Soon enough, Eino got lost, aimed his weapon up and prayed: "God, please let Toivo see my arrows!"
