BOLAS - different types, making my own and need help please
May 2nd, 2024 at 3:17pm

Hi guys, Id like to ask on various types of Bolas, maybe depending on localities in South America, different styles, different ways of making and materials used for such, also would like to try to make my own, as a first stuff ever.

I do not know, which tools would I need and what do would You recommend me to obtain or buy for such project. I do not want to go the simpliest way as I am not rushing, so it can be a longer term project, but want it really look good and authentic and maybe meanwhile for run make something out of paracord. Same thing, do not know what type of paracord do I need and the lenght of it etc.

Any knowledgable guys can help me out please? It is kind of a new hobby and I want to be good at it, so unsure, would be 50 USD enough for purschasing the material or do I need to add something up to it, I have low knowledge of this and will appreciate any kind of link on youtube or other experienced members advice, tips and tutorials.

If someone can go bit more indepth, I would extremely appreciate that. Thanks alot to everyone for helping me and wish You guys nice evening! With the products or either tools for making, please, try and be bit more specific

Im thinking of buying 100m paracord, its a 3 mm thin, is it good choice, or should I order different thickness or even different material for rope?

Don't sweat it.
Take 3pieces of string.
Take 3 circles of cloth.
Put gravel in the cloth.
Tie them into bags.
Knot the strings together, whirl and throw.
Don't like it ?
Try different string, different cloth, different lengths, whirl and throw.
Better or worse than first ?
Learn by experimentation, using what you have before you waste money on something which may bring you no pleasure ... or become a life long hobby !

I made my own trying to mimic the boleadoras that Gauchos use in Argentina by using thicker cordage and tying them onto hooks that I screwed into leather wrapped wooden balls. I lost it a while ago but over all the process took very little time (bar the leather), probably 10 - 15 minutes in one sitting. For that style in particular I feel like the majority of the time spent is probably on adding designs and making it look pretty as opposed to actually making the weapon. I've even seen a video of someone using paracord and hex nuts as bolas and I imagine that takes even less time to make.

Overall I think Bolas are one of the simplest weapons to make as basically everything can be however you want it, the length of rope, thickness, weight of the stones don't really matter as long as its weights on the end of a string. If you do want some guidance on length of string, while researching I read that some Gauchos leave one of the strings a bit longer than the other two, and that this is the one you hold as you swing it above your head. I made the two other ropes the length of my palm to my collarbone so they were pretty long and worked pretty well. In terms of weight as long as its not extremely light it should work fine, I even made some of tennis balls to throw at my friends.

If you don't know this website, a good beginning.

After if you take pleasure, you can make historical bolas or others.
