But ....... He is doing a powerful back twist on the strands as he braids them in. This gives a different result to simply braiding. 😁👍

But watching this, it seems like he only keeps the twist in the crossing strand. Am I overthinking this and doing too much?

You only need to twist the strand as it's being added to the braid. This is shown very well in AA's Balearic sling video when he starts adding material.
