Length of long slings (Read 632 times)

Yfir Descens Offline Slinging Rocks! Posts: 127 Sydney Gender:	Length of long slings May 30^th, 2023 at 4:15am I'd like to make a long sling for throwing over far distances. Since I've never made one before, I was wondering what sling lengths you've all had success with for long distance throwing?

I have a ~60" (~152cm) unfolded sling that works pretty well. Longer slings would throw farther, but at a point they would get unwieldy.

I've also heard (and can at least verify on a staff sling) that lighter slings throw farther.

You could probably make a 60-72 (folded) sling work, but you'd need special assistance or something to keep things together until the thing stabilized after a couple of rotations.

Longest practical length? Probably double the length of your armspan holding the pouch in one hand and the cord ends in the other.

If all you care about is maximizing distance, a lightweight staff sling will be a LOT easier to wield -- say a 6 ft staff and a 3 ft doubled sling...

Mersa Interfector Viris Spurii Offline Druid Posts: 2612 Australia Gender:	Re: Length of long slings Reply #4 - May 31^st, 2023 at 1:54am Roughly 40-50” Short sling + 50% = medium length Medium +50% = long sling length. Formula seems pretty true across the community. So for me 20” is as short as I’d go . 29.5 is about perfect for targets and 44”.5 is my preferred long sling .

Posts: 13834 New Jersey, USA Gender:	Re: Length of long slings Reply #7 - May 31^st, 2023 at 3:43pm When I first started slinging I experimented with some crazy long slings. As my form improved I found that I didn't need such slings to attain more distance. For me the ideal sling length is half my height or 38". Everyone is different so experimentation is a good idea.
