Help with instructions for a finger loop
May 3rd, 2023 at 3:44pm

Hi everyone,

For my 4-strand round-braid sling I am not sure what type of finger loop to use, as I have only braided finger loops for flat-braid slings. My idea is maybe I can have two strands for the finger loop, create a cobra-knot wrapping around it, then fold it to make the actual loop, and finally finish off with a matthew walker knot (from which point I would simply start the 4-strand round braid).

Would this work?

Or are there any other suggestions?

Hi,
It sounds like it would work. It looks like a similar method is used on the Practical Paracord slings based on pictures.

So far what I've done for finger loops on 4-strand slings is twisted 2 strands together and folded them over to make a loop. The problem with this, however, is the loop twists and constricts your finger. Plus, it is quite thin, so it really digs in. This method has nothing to separate the loop and braid like your matthew walker knot would, furthering the finger-constriction.

I think that the method you describe would be effective and create a comfortable and good looking finger loop  Smiley (I might have to use it for future slings, as it sounds better than my current method Grin Thanks for the post!)

Once, Toivo and Eino were building a house, but as Toivo worked, he would occasionally throw a nail over his shoulder. When Eino asked why he was being so wasteful, he said, “The heads are on the wrong side!” Eino looked at him and said, “You dummy, those are for the other side of the house!”

I've never braided paracord for a sling.  I like them, but I just buy them from Channing (Practical Paracord).

If I was going to do one, I would probably try out this technique from Road Dog on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LhOQdpjmsI.  The finger loop starts around the 30 second mark of the video.

Your idea sounds like it would work too.  Only one way to find out.  Give it a try!  A lot of sling making is experimentation.  Smiley

With some types of braided slings I start at the loop and braid from there, if that makes sense.  Otherwise I simply double the end of the retention cord and West Country Whip it.

Yes, it works really well.

I just made a sling with what you described (or at least something close to it). The finger loop is more comfortable than those of my other slings, and looks really nice! This sling is definitely going to be my new primary rock-thrower. Thank you for posting, as I would never have thought of this finger loop method on my own!

Good luck on your sling!  Grin

That looks awesome Eino, glad it turned out well!

Blindsquirrel, I have seen that video and I really like it, however I am trying to figure out how to do something similar but without having a two-finger loop. Just a standard one-finger loop.
