About twelve years ago I was at a barbeque at a friend's house.  One of his neighbors who was from somewhere in Africa sent over a plate of barbequed chicken.  I tried some and realized that it was spiced with something the likes of which I had never tasted before.  It was absolutely delicious and totally alien.  It was like discovering a new color.  I never did meet the African neighbors to ask what the mystery spice was and I resigned myself to the fact that I would probably never know.
About two weeks ago I was watching a rerun of Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown.  He was in Ethiopia and of course sampling the local cuisine. He described a spice used heavily in Ethiopian cooking... Berbere.  It sounded like what I had tasted at that barbeque.  I decided to take a chance and ordered some  from Amazon.  Much to my delight Berbere is the mystery spice.  I just made some pork chops with it and they were heavenly.
It's potent, slightly hot, and a little bitter but in a good way.  If you want to try something very different and extremely delicious get some Berbere.
