New sling bullet designs
Dec 14th, 2022 at 9:57am

Good day to all, I thought I would share a project I’m working on. I’ve got several different clay models in the oven drying so I can mold them in silicone to be able to cast them in the anchoring cement. Here r a couple of pictures of one of the smaller ones. I call them fluted biconicals, or rifled sling bullets. The idea came from a video I watch where an archer was shooting fletchless arrows that had wind grooves carved into the shaft where the fletching should have been, and low and behold the dang arrows spiraled just like it had fletching. And the mass removed from the tail end should make the projectile more weight forward and hopefully will help it fly kind of like a lawn dart. Once I have some cast up I’ll post up some performance videos and c if I can get some good footage of them in flight.

I experimented with these a few years ago. Didn't really find a benefit other than that air resistance may help them stay spin stable, which is potentially useful if using very long-aspect ratio projectiles.

Unlike ur’s I’ve tried to have a weight bias to one end of the projectile, that way it should behave like a small lawn dart and want to fly in more a natural arc with out tumbling. Which also helps with projectile stability. And I’ve found from spinning different shaped rocks and the ammo I’ve cast,  that some of these shapes want to spin like a top and self right. And then there r some that something is not right on the centerline of the spin and it behaves erratic, toppling over on to there side in just a few revolutions.. This I have done spinning them on my counter top. Its interesting u should have a go at it. I’ll do a video and post it back here to show what I’m talking about. Do u remember the toy top that has the dowel rod on the one end and the ball on the other, u spin it on the ball and it stands up on the dowel and spins like that till the friction becomes to great and it slows and falls over. This may b an effect that could b used to an advantage to deliver the glande with a known point first just by getting it into a spin that makes it self orient to a known end.🤔

The concern I have with this is that the grooves (or fins or whatever) that are carved into stone will need create enough lift (drag) to change the stone's direction and spin which was applied by the sling.  Unless of course if the throw from the sling (meaning the projectile orientation and spin) was perfectly aligned with the grooves carved into it.  Because stones are much smaller and denser than an arrow, a lot of air will need to be caught to adjust the stone's flight.  I don't think there would be much effect unless whatever it is that's catching the air is very substantial.

Just my thoughts.  I certainly don't know.  It will be interesting to see a test.

Here r some pics of how they set in the pouch. When I place my projectile in my sling the point of the projectile points to the right, this always gives a rifled spin to my shots. These r designed to let the sling put all of the spin into them and there shape and direction of spirals grooved into them goes with the spin so there should little to no air resistance at the back end. I’ve got one curing in silicone right now and will b casting some Quickcrete tomorrow and doing some testing with them this weekend. I do think that the shape and how the mass is distributed will b very important and have a drastic effect on performance.. The one I’m molding now spins like a top, even with a bad spin put on it. I have a couple of others that want to lay down and spin on their side. It made me think of the spinning top toy I was talking about earlier, that stands up on the dowel u use to spin it with. I’ll have some video of them in flight hopefully by this weekend or the beginning of next week. Hopefully with out standing results.

Here is one of the new bullets in flight at super slo mo, with it exploding against my 4x4 board.

They show promise in flight, they were easy to get on line(or close to the line I was aiming for the orange ring). I shattered the others before I could get video but there r more in the works. As well as I’m researching a denser and heavier reinforced concrete mix that should still give a smooth finish like that of the rockite and quikrete. Which I like cause it does eat into ur slings pouch like some stones do. Enjoy

Here r some of the glande designs I’m playing around with, to c what does what. The 3 in the lower left still need to b molded in silicone, but I think the torpedo looking one in the middle of the 3 is going to perform the best. The one with the mold all by itself to the left, is the one that I shot in the video up above. The twisted shaped ones r a novel way to remove some of the mass in the tailend, and c if it helps with anything? If anyone is interested in any of the silicone molds just let me know.

Here is a hollow point bullet I’m getting ready for silicone. Then going to make up some quikrete slugs to try out. Hoping it will have a similar effect as hitting someone with a cupped hand. As in the big cup in the end should trap some air upon impact for a nice pop!

Good day to all. Just finished with the video of the  different shaped projectiles im testing out to see what works the best and is the easiest to make. Hope y’all enjoy and if you have any thoughts please let me know. That is the only way we will ever rediscover the knowledge that has been lost through time and to people who think they should be the only ones with that info.
Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/bVDu9XlN1LI
Have a great one and enjoy
Ps let me know how I can improve the experience for u the viewer. Thanks and have a good one.

I came up with this idea to combat the off center of mass my hand made bullets probably have, it is a molding of the pointed end of a plumbbob cemented together to form a biconical projectile. I’ll b doing testing in the up coming days and will post back.
