Heres an interesting though experiment. Perhaps these balls were part of a game, slung maybe?

I've made some plastic replicas and Im going to see what they're like to sling, perhaps they make a noise, perhaps they fly straighter than a smooth ball. Maybe they were wrapped with a cord and flung like a Scottish hammer or from a Sling?

Early Bocce?

Oh, wow. Those Scottish examples are gorgeous!  I doubt someone would use these to sling, because they would be so labor-intensive to make, just to loose it in a field or lake.  But It would be fun to chuck one, I'm sure they make a racket!

I am in an Experimental Archaeology program in Ireland and a classmate recreated one of these for a project. Unbelievably labor intensive, highly doubt someone would go through all that work just to sling them away, even for a game. They seem like an unbelievably perfect size and weight to sling however...
