Building Competition Target--the Ringer
Sep 17th, 2022 at 2:24am

I built a target that approximates the international standard:  It's a 4 foot by 4 foot plywood square with an 18-inch garbage can lid ringer (closest thing I could find to the 20-inch standard)--and it suffices.

For anyone out there who has also built a standard target, was there some commonplace and, hopefully, cheap metal disk  that allowed you to create a 20-inch ringer for it?

50cm disc

I have 2 steel and one aluminium

Built a few different target designs over the years
I think the current one made from polypropylene plumbing supplies is the best
Lightweight, reasonably portable and uses camo netting for the main back and an aluminium disc Diana.
Also virtually indestructible.
Polypropylene is wonderful stuff Smiley

I just got the discs from a local aluminium engineering firm who owed me a few favours.

But they'd be cheap to buy
Just find an engineering firm and get them cut to size.

Dustbin lid sounds like it'll work well Smiley

Jump on Amazon (or wherever) and search for a 20 inch heavy duty pizza pan. You should be able to find one for under $20. That's what is on my target. It will dent up depending what you sling at it, but works great!

Pretty sure a disc wouldn't cost that much.
It only needs to be 3mm thick.

I hang mine from the top corners, even with tennis balls they ring line a gong Smiley

You could be right.  But here's one for $16, https://www.webstaurantstore.com/american-metalcraft-hactp20-20-heavy-weight-alu....  I'm not sure how much cheaper an aluminum disc could actually be found.

If a disc is found for less than that, it could definitely be a better option.  Especially if you can get one that's a little thicker.  But then you have to figure in your search time to find a place, as well as communication to see if they'll do it.  If I was going to get an actual metal plate, I would probably go with steel.  Then heavier projectiles wouldn't damage it as much.

the steel ones go rusty Smiley
Well mine have.
Guess they're mild steel not stainless.
Stainless would cost a lot more.

Big pizza pan - looks good Smiley
14 gauge= 1.6mm (just looked it up) - so not tin foil, should be pretty durable.

pizza pans i use just came from the pound shop ( i make pizzas with them, not slinging targets).
You could get two cheap thin ones and epoxy them together - that'd give you a really tough target.

I was trying to figure out how you'd mount a frying pan lol

Actually theres a real advantage to practicing on a smaller diana.

If you ever get to competition, you'll be used to a smaller bulseye and should hit the full size one much easier Smiley

Well mine have.

I think a couple coats of Rust-Oleum would take care of that.  A touch up now and then would probably be needed if you're slinging rocks against it.  Cheesy

I know Kick has used them before.  I think he just hung it from the handle.  It wasn't secured in place and would swing around after a hit, but it looked like it worked well as a target.
