I need a good net for group-slinging
Apr 10th, 2022 at 3:26pm

I’m officially starting a slinging group and need a big net that’s strong enough to handle rusty balls and rocks. I want to suspend it between two trees that are about 40-50ft apart. The net will prevent us from losing our ammo. It can be 20ft, though. Any suggestions or alternatives?

A heavy canvas tarp hung from the top edge and with sandbag weights at the bottom to keep it from "flying" in a breeze but not so rigid that rocks go through it. instead of being slowed and dropped.

Old or used indoor/outdoor carpet can work the same way as a canvas tarp.   A number of backyard archers I know use i/o carpet as their backstop.

I used to think this was going to be simple.

Fruit tree netting is strong and porous enough to allow wind to not ruin it and catch your ammo. A 20 meter roll would be enough to have a couple of layers to it.

Conveyer belt rubber. It’s heavy and expensive but it’s about the only thing that can really take the abuse

We had a golf driving range down the road that was removing their netting and I happened to get lucky and get as much of the 100 plus yards of netting as I wanted. I hung it between to twenty foot high poles. I had it on pulleys so I could lower it in heavy winds.

I tried a heavy 1" thick rubber target about 36" x 36" BAD idea. The rocks bounced off like they were launched from a cannon. A couple layers of old carpet would work but may not last too long.

There are pictures of my netting setup from "way back" if you click on my past posts. And a concrete recycling place I used to sling at.

Builders rubble netting.

Cheap, easy to get hold of, comes in any size and two or three thicknesses will stop anything.

I use a heavy duty golfing net right now but not sure I would use rocks on it for the simple reason that its expensive and not made for something as heavy as rocks. It might work and last a long time but thats just me.

You want a simple and cheap option that will work for certain? Old carpet. Call up your local carpet installation store and ask if you can root around in their dumpster for a large piece. It will hold up to rocks and anything else you throw at it. I used carpet as a larget backstop for several years and it never wore out.

I have used a couple layers of tyvek in the past works well on everything except lead glans, steel ball bearing and razor glans lol but rocks and golf balls it works great
And free if you're a contractor or are freinds with one and use the left over rolls or peices

I was using a piece of old carpet a while ago but it was kind of a fluffy carpet and every time I hit it, it would break off some strands of the fibers.  The woman of the household did not approve of the plastic fibery bits polluting the yard so I had to take it down.

The moral of my story I guess is:  if you try carpet, get a low-height, non-fuzzy, no-frills carpet, like something you would find in an office building or a school.  Something more durable.

don't use standard tarp - even olf balls go through that Smiley

Although as long as you onloy hang something from the top, it will 'catch' the missile and be a lot more effective than if you anchor it to the ground as well.
