I had one pulled a little over a year ago.  Just like you mentioned, things actually felt a lot better once the tooth was gone because it was partially rotted away and starting to cause pain.  The pain wasn't bad yet when I got it pulled, but I figured I should get it done before that happened.

Mine were going bad so I had them preemtively removed. Since the future has become quite uncertain regarding many things
it's a good thing to take care of such things before such services are no longer potentially available. It went perfect and they were out much quicker than I thought.

   I had mine removed in my late teens.  My teeth are VERY firmly attached. it was an ordeal.
