You could use both clay and stones in it. She could use clay for the first challenge and a stone for the second.

Is the legend and the main story at the same time period?

Use a stone for the gold coin shot?

Yes

In fact, the main story starts with her in the present day… trying to convince a doctor shes telling him the truth—would you believe a woman who claimed to be over two thousand years old but outwardly appeared to be in her mid-forties?

The plot of your story is a lot more complicated than I first thought Grin

Also will this be the first book that you've written, or have you written and published any books before?

Find someone with 20-20 vision and see at what distance they can comfortably see a small coin.

I'll volunteer myself. My eyesight is about 20/20 last time I checked it.  I just went outside and saw a small black metal shed with bright rivets, about the size of a US dime. I paced off 33 steps (damn near 30m). Seeing the rivets was no issue. At 44 paces (40m) I could still make out the rivets enough to shoot at them, but at 50m, I couldn't see them any longer, they were just discolorations on the black surface.

Welcome, Easybreeze;
Good story.  I'd say thirty paces is a good distance.  I don't agree that shorter slings are more accurate.  That's a matter of personal preference.  I'm most accurate with a sling of 38".

There is one problem with having the commander throwing it up in the air, if you decide to go that route, as she would almost have to be somewhat far-sighted.

This video is very interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8Yp9SjCU5E
he is using a bow instead of a sling but still.

1.  Robin's egg is about 2cm x 3cm.
2.  Reference coin sizes to finger tip diameters
3.  Goats rather than sheep.
3.  You need a better scenario. As a slinger, historian and editor, I find the whole scene untenable.

Roman soldiers seldom acted as "traveler escorts", and only for a highborn party, not merchants.

Romans just wouldn't offer to buy food, or accept a challenge from a local peasant girl at a village well.

If you want her to show off her sling skills she could be out with the flock and her friend, idly knocking pebbles off a rock in the pasture as they come marching past.

If you want her to interact with the Romans, you could have her defend her flock with her sling against a thieving AWOL Roman -- and his commander might be impressed enough to let her live un-raped.

FWIW I've been a writer/editor for over 40 years.
