Nails were better in the past

Cut nails instead of round nails, this video tells you why, once you understand how they work, it's simply genius.

I saw that before.  Agreed, a very interesting video.  He actually got accused by some viewers of rigging the tests and did a follow up video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdTrGCZORBk.

Yes, very interesting. Just about everything is made more cheaply than it once was.

the thing is nails may not hold as well - but glues have improved immensely.
So I always either glue and nail or glue and screw. I use self tapping screws that don't need pre-drilled holes.

It's certainly interesting.
But you know, use glue Smiley

Even cheap pound shop pva won't break at the glued joint.
Nails I only really use to hold things together long enough for the glue to set.

reminds me of this video

I like the elegance of a lot of Japanese joinery, multiple wedges, blind wedges and the like. Even without modern glue they hold very well.

I was familiar with the phrase, but never bothered to look up how it came about.  Very interesting.

yeah that is interesting. And yeah, those would be bastards to remove alright !

Doing that would also improve the holding of modern wires nails.

Been looking at bandsaws lately and speaking of being better in the past...yeesh. lol. Its pretty common for experienced woodworkers to look for saws that were made in the 80s to get the best quality. Basically these days expect to pay over a $1000 for even a half decent saw or get lucky and find one from back in the day.

Yeah - mine died a couple weeks back.
now it just makes a weird noise and nothing  moves.
I can move the blade round by hand, so it's not jammed and nothing seemed to break.

Just need the storms to stop so my mate can get to the shed and see if it's repairable.

It'll make the pinbll machine a lot easier to build, if we can get it working again.

Haven't had the guts to go look at what it would cost to replace it.

But certainly a helluva lot more than I paid 25 odd years ago.

(has quick look) - yeah somewhere between £4-500.
So it better be fixable Sad

This is almost exactly what I've got, just mine is a quarter century older lol

Sounds like your motor burned out? Theres not a whole lot to a bandsaw so if everythings moving normal by turning the wheels thats where I would look.
.
The cool thing is sometimes this isnt a bad thing actually. You can find a used motor that has more amps than the one you bought with it and get a nice little upgrade. Just make sure it has the same rpm as the previous.

Ive come so close over the last several months on multiple occasions to getting a ridiculously good bandsaw for pennies on the dollar. I *really* dont want to drop a couple grand on a saw but I want a saw that works like it costs a couple grand.  Cry Grin Anyways, its always a waiting game with these things. Just hope my patience holds up.
