How to make woomera (or atlatl) - looking for help
Jan 30th, 2022 at 5:36am

Hi guys, I realized blowgun wouldnt probably be possible, so did a small research and quiet like the Aboriginal woomera, is there anyone founded who might help me with guide how to construct this weapon or essential tools and materials needed? If no one experienced with making this weapon, it can also be atlatl, I like that one aswell. Thank you very much!

What's wrong with making a blowgun ?
Lots of threads on the subject and plenty of members who make and use them.

A woomera is basically a slightly different shaped atlatl. So lots of atlatl markets and users here as well.
We've got a few Aussie members who might have some local insight as well.

You want it we got it Smiley

Well the woomera itself is pretty easy to construct but a spear/dart  in much harder.
Where are you based .
I’m in Western Australia and know what materials were used here .
But depending where you are will be different.

Woomeras are different to Atlatl in that they’re not a dedicated spear thrower and we’re used as a water vessel, club, bowl. Wooden blade , ect.

It’s something I’d like to build in the future.

Woomeras sound like a bit more to make, but an atlatl is pretty easy. It’s pretty much a stick with a nub on the end. Not that too complicated. There are videos for it online. You can really make it as complicated as you want.

For the simplest type, you could try something like this:

For a basic carved atlatl, you could try this:

The darts are where it’s more complicated. You want the shaft to be pretty flexible or it won’t fly straight. You can find saplings or use dowels (splicing or connecting in some way). Going back to the flexibility, which is super important, a good dart might be around 6 ft long and 1/2 inch wide.

Here is a channel with a lot of helpful content for that stuff:

If you want to just buy stuff so you can have something to reference in the future, try ordering from Thunderbird Atlatl.

yeah, also be careful when you first throw the dart.

The throw is a gradual acceleration, a bit like using a staff sling.

If, like me, the first time you use one you just throw hard - the dart snaps in 2.

And david morningstar glares at you and reaches for the duct tape Smiley
