Types of slings and its techniques of making, materials etc - looking for h
Jan 26th, 2022 at 10:02am

Hi, Im very new, so first want to thanks for accepting, my issue is the knots I need to know, techniques that are good to create the high quality lasting sling. First of I bought 2mm jute cords, but didnt made a research before and unfortunately realized, that they might be too thick for the sling. I have it, but decided not to use and instead ordered some yarn I think is baby alpaca x bamboo iirc it should be very good, but maybe bit slippery when braiding as the lady told me when I called to the store. I want to use kumihimo, that I bought, Im learning fast and Id like something that would been a bit historicaly appropriate, if not the material than at least the braiding used.
So any help with this would been great. My other question comes to the types, that I could make, Im very new so Iv only heard about Shepherd, balearic, but Im sure, that there were used many other interesting slings I have no clue about, so You might give me suggestions, that what might be a interesting project for me, as of now Im in hospital and do have plenty of free time to work on it. Thanks, almost forgotten....what channels dedicated to slings You recommend ? 3-8 BEST. Thanks to everyone, that is willing to help me, because I have not much of a knowledge so far. I would like some books, but if I order now, Ill wait at least a month for delivery from my experience. Greetings from Czechia!

Like you, I'm an entry level type and I'm also doing my homework on Andean style sling braiding.   If you don't mind spending some $$ on books, check these out:
https://www.amazon.com/Andean-Sling-Braids-Designs-Textile/dp/0764351036/ref=sr_...
https://www.amazon.com/Sling-Braiding-Traditions-Techniques-Bolivia/dp/076435430...
I believe these are the best and most current available books on kumihimo style sling braiding.   They're not cheap, but they appear to be a pretty complete treatment of the subject.   I'm however a mostly ignorant newbie.  There are others here who are very experienced and know universes more about this subject than me.   Their comments should be more insightful than mine.

Id like to start braiding asap. Im interested in other cultures too, not only Andean. Im very courious about catapults used in Asia, Oceania or by barbarians in Europe, eventually Romans. Have a great evening and thanks for yor help

You might be able to find something to do in the plans in this archive:

2mm jute is fine for a standard braided split pouch, or apache if you want to stitch some leather on.
You can probably do a 3 strand braid with 2xcords per strand, or 5 strand with 1xcord per braid perhaps. Tune for whatever thickness you need.

This is a fairly basic braided split pouch sling tutorial, and a good place to start
https://www.slinging.org/articleimages/20/19.htm

The below is a really good tutorial from forum member Sarosh, it's a bit more advanced than the basic one above:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__NpItACbBo

This is from ex-forum member Rockman, who originated the rockman sling (well, popularised for the online community most likely), this is also a bit more complicated as it has a woven pouch.
https://sites.google.com/site/rockmansling/Home

Check out this megathread for further inspiration:
https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1172017416

Once you get the basic construction of a braided sling down you can work from there.

Welcome btw!

These two videos helped me a lot with Andean slings:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMJAAkhHcZE
and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw1chCl6fXs

If you slow the video down to 50% or 75%, you can see better what she's doing and understand the Spanish better.

I use one knot.

It depends what type of sling you want to make.

Paracord and leather, makes slings at least as good as any braided sling.
It just depends whether you want to spend a lot of time making slings, or more time using them.

Or whether historical accuracy matters to you more than pure practicality.

Ask twenty slingers what the best type of sling is and you'll get twenty different answers.  My favorite type is a modified pj.  It's proper name is a Five Strand Sheep Shank Sling.  Sady pj's original instructions are lost as far as I can tell, but here's my take on it:
http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1338672380/0#0
I also like a Rockman (Split Pouch Sing) and a TS3. (Three Strand Sheep Shank Sling)
https://web.archive.org/web/20121104161418/http://slinging.org/index.php?page=ho...

I didn't include the link to the TS3 tutorial because it's not a very good tutorial.  I'll have to do a proper version one of these days.  Plus it's just like the pj but with two less warp strands.

All three of these slings are very functional, relatively easy to make, and don't look bad.
   That's my two cents.
