Don't be so quick to dismiss things. There can always be a possibility or method you didn't consider. There was a guy here once that was using long, wide strips of some kind of cloth (maybe it was burlap, don't remember). But they looked much more like a scarf than a sling. He was slinging with them though.

I'm curious about your test. Was it with a blanket? If so, how big was it?

I imagine with practice a blanket could work as long as it wasn't too big a blanket.

If you pre-fold it to be narrow and bound (maybe cheat with some rubber bands) it should work. I'll try it with a soccer ball and a beach towel.
