Sling scene in Charlie Brown Christmas
Dec 26th, 2021 at 5:42am

https://youtu.be/9UsNw8a-iSQ

Here is the clip. The scene starts around 1 minute and 20 seconds.  This is within the first 5 minutes of the movie.  I was watching it last night, during our Christmas dinner, and its the first time i ever noticed it. Linus uses his blanket, as a 1 piece sling, and hits the target first shot. Has anyone else noticed it?

The last time I watched this was before I started slinging.  I didn't remember this scene was there.

Don't be so quick to dismiss things.  There can always be a possibility or method you didn't consider.  There was a guy here once that was using long, wide strips of some kind of cloth (maybe it was burlap, don't remember).  But they looked much more like a scarf than a sling.  He was slinging with them though.

I'm curious about your test.  Was it with a blanket?  If so, how big was it?

Look at the way he points both his toes and his non-dominant hand at the target.  Clearly the animators knew a little something about slinging with a blanket.

@MikeG did you use an underhand style like Linus?

that sounds like im a bad slinger. The use of a blanket is not controllable. The ammo is caught by the blanket and cant exit the "sling" properly, its almost impossible to shoot in the right direction

I have noticed it.  It seems a little impossible to do in real life, but sometimes you just do that one unbelievable shot.  And remember, he used his lucky blanket...

He’s also using a reverse hammer grip, which may be the best way to release a blanket.

I remember the scene (watch that every Christmas), but that never caught that.  Very good observation.  And a reverse grip is definitely possible: https://youtu.be/cFBfAJpdM0g.

vetryan15 is not intending to call you a bad slinger (I'm inferring, he can correct me if I'm wrong).  The meaning is that few things (when it comes to slinging) are not as impossible as it may seem.  I agree that a blanket is going to be far from ideal.  It may need a certain size or shaped projectile.  Or  twisted up in a certain way.  But at most one should only claim 'I could not find a way to make this work'.  And then others can agree, or attempt it themselves.
