Glow in the dark sling missile for dogs :-)
Dec 1st, 2021 at 10:06am

So it's now dark when I'm dog walking until early spring Sad

So I decided to make a light up sling ball/missile.
It's more dice shaped than ball shaped, simply because its easier to print and I needed one face as a removeable plug so I could insert the light widget.
Which I got from a dog collar light.

It's made from heavy duty polyurethane, and I use a short rod to switch it.

In the video the plug was about 1mm too long and can be switched by squeezing. And possibly by bouncing.
It's now got a shorter plug and can only be switched with the rod.
To be fair, I did throw it hard at concrete floor and could not make the switch activate, but better safe than it switching off and getting lost Smiley

I will attempt to take a video of use. As the dogs also have lights on, it should be interesting Smiley

Anyone interested in the files and link to lights I used, let me know and I'll bung them across.

You'll also need 2 3mm nuts and 2 12x3mm bolts.
They are used to stop the plug unscrewing.
Well untwisting, it's got a 45degree twist that stops it coming out in a straight line.
And it's definitely dog proof Smiley

If you don't have dogs it's a virtually indestructible, hard to lose, night slinging ammo Smiley

I'll see if I can make a smaller one with the same light units (I bought a pack of 8, all different colours).

Cheers.
Took it for a walk last night, works brilliantly.
But as for videos.
If you took a big dose of acid, wrapped a thin scarf over your eyes and then threw some light sticks around while looking through a kaleidoscope - it would make more sense Smiley

This is the GOOD one !
You can sort of see the windup and the throw, it's the orange blur.
But after that, use your imagination Smiley

Made a smaller one, turns out I still need 2, as dream is no more inclined to give one up than he is to give up tennis balls.

To get it any smaller, I'll need a different design.
So unless someone wants a tiny one, I'm happy with this size Smiley

Plus it's a 6 hour print, versus the 11 hours of the larger one.

you know how sometimes things suddenly seem bloody obvious.

After making the lightup ammo, it occurred to me that if i made the smallish ones completely solid, I'd have an indestructible, reuseable, reclycable relatively cheap, infinite supply of target ammo.
In different colours.

It's also not bouncy, so you don't have to worry about richochets.
And comes in lots of different colours.

I've made the shape a little rounder, but kept the basic dice configuration as it doesn't roll as far as a simple ball.

The only real caveat is that they are not very heavy. A 40mm one runs at about 60gms.
Which is fine for me, it's only got to go 20 metres after all.

So what I could do and might try is to print some with a weighted centre.
lead shot in clay would work well, the centre incklusion would need to be a cube,
Thatb way you print upo until the last layer before the void is covered.
stop, insert the cubes and then finish off.

I'll try themn au-natural initially.

And yes it would really piss some of the balearic rule-nazi guys off.
But hey, that's just a bonus whistle

The way I see it - either everyone has to use the exact same ammo - or anyone can use any ammo - nothing else makes any real sense.

I figure the dayglow yellow will be the best for retrieval Smiley

Soooo, the little bastard, managed to pick up both cubes at the same time, somehow switch the big one off and then abandon it somewhere among a lot of leaves.
Even with two torches I could not find it Sad

So I need a redesign.
Dogs jaws would seem to work on industrial compression principles.
So the light switch has got to be out of any planes of compression.

I hit that damn thing with a hammer, hard and the switch didn't trip.

You wouldn't have thought this little bugger had that kind of bite.

I wouldn't have thought he could have picked them both up at the same time, but he did !
So I'll need a redesign and have to carry three !

Well, as it turns out I owed dream an apology and don't have to redesign after all.

Turns out he'd actually dropped the big cube at the other end of the field, in thick grssd covered with leaves.

Went down there tonight, and he stood by it, and it was still flashing !

It's dark, wet, cold and just plain miserable out at the moment, so it doesn't look like anyone else had been down there Smiley
