Has anyone tried using Saw Palmetto?
Nov 11th, 2021 at 10:57am

I've been trying to extract fiber from my local plants- one of which is the Saw Palmetto. I tried boiling it for about 8 minutes as I've seen that can help, and now I'm to the point of scraping. My problem is none of the green comes off. I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrong, but I need some help. Thank you!

I'm planning on using palmetto fibers for sling-braiding in the future so I'd like to know how to scrape the green off as well. I thought it'd be just like working with Yucca. How and with what are you scraping it?

I've tried using a knife, the side of a fork, a spoon, a paint scraper, and more and everything has about the same effect. I've just been scraping against a block of wood, with no particular method.

I will try it out soon. I think I saw some nearby my house that I can borrow. I'll let you know if the way I usually do it works.

Oops. After seeing the video from Channing, I'm not sure that what I saw was actually saw palmetto... so, scratch that.

Retting tanks anyone? Ive also heard you can do running water retting tanks with a simple pump as well but its not needed. I watched a tutorial on it years ago and the guy claimed there was some type of benefit. Anyways if these works on yucca I imagine it would work on saw palmetto as well.
