Slinging into space!

Quote:
The machine is composed of a 1,000-ton steel vacuum chamber that maintains the low pressure required for a carbon fiber tether to spin at incredibly high speeds while minimizing aerothermal heating. Air is sucked out of the chamber prior to launch to allow for a low-friction environment, enabling the projectile to reach a speed of thousands of miles per hour before it is launched out of a skyward-facing tube.

Okay, its not really a sling because there is no throw, but it is close enough for me.
I want to know what they are using for a counterbalancing mass, and what happens to that when the payload is released?

Man...one mistake and its going to be obliterated. Its a cool idea but shoot... I still think the rail gun makes more sense. Especially since the military has already done the R&D.

I will say though that the ideas engineers come up with both fascinate and terrify me lol. I would never have thought this couldve even leave the design stage.

I had forgotten about that beautifully mad invention.

That reminds me of the steam-powered machine gun.  You can load a tubular magazine that can drop one ball at a time, or you can hold it open and go full auto.https://www.wearethemighty.com/popular/winans-steam-powered-machine-gun/  I found the plans for a miniature one for BBs that uses a tape roll, paper clip, and electric motor in one of the Poor Man's James Bond books.  I forget which volume.

It's a brilliant idea and I think it will work.

Try logging out and logging back in again David.

The forum software is weird.
It'll let you post a new thread, but not edit it.
Log out and back in again fixes it.
It seems to keep an eye on IP addresses, and if that changes you need a fresh login.

A Canadian engineer built about 90% of a giant rail gun that was destined for cheap satellite launch.

Rumour has it that the US secret service shut  the project down and killed him.
He was also the guy who supplied sadam Hussain with the best mobile artillery on the planet. So the smart conspiracy theories have it that it was payback and nothing to do with the satellite launcher stealing NASA's business.

Last time I checked the bulk of the railgun launcher was still there.

It's not a centrifuge as such. Centrifuges are balanced.
Thus would be exactly like a sling.
Think timpa after taking the DOOM berserker powerup Smiley

But I'm with Morphy, one miscalculation, frayed tether or vibration and the thing would test itself apart.

But a very cool idea !

It'll work right up to the point where it doesn't.

As long as it's isolated enough and run remotely, the odd devasting misfire would become an acceptable risk.

I suspect it would blow up less frequently than rockets do Smiley
