Will cut cloth used for a sling pouch unravel?
Oct 17th, 2021 at 9:51pm

I am going to cut an old pair of blue jeans to make pouches for a sling. will it fall apart?  Could I put some glue on the edges?  Or would it just unravel enough to look "edgy."

Has anyone else used old cloth?

Yes - all the time.  In fact, my favorite sling design starts with “zombie leather” - a strip of material from old jeans that I laminate with duct tape - it gives the jeans a second life, hence the zombie appellation.

Cool!

So without duct tape or adhesive, it will totally unravel?

I don't think denim would come apart right away.  But it will likely start to fray and get worse as you use the sling.  I have some scraps of denim from an old pair of jeans that I'm planning to do the exact same thing with.  Haven't yet though.  I have used linen fabric for a pouch in the past.  That stuff really started coming apart after it was cut.  I just folded the edge over and a did a quick stitch around the outside with a needle and thread.  It held up quite well.  Not sure if I'm going to do that with the denim or not.

Theres types of glue that can be applied to help with fraying and not make it overly stiff.

You want to fold the frayed edges in.

yeah used double denim a lot a few years ago for mass producing pouches for group sessions..

Cut the jeans into even sized square panels - bigger the bgetter, but make them the same size and square not oblong - reason made clear below Smiley

cover one half with a thin, even layer of pva glue (the cheap white wood glue you get from buck stores works best).
Then rotate the second panel 90 degrees so that the 'grain' is at right angles to the first piece.
Then sandwich them together. - best to do it on old newspaper or cardoard as it can get messy Smiley

Press the two pieces firmly together, excess glue will squish out the sides. Really work the two layers so the glue impregnates both pieces of denim.
Rolling with a wallpaper roller works well. Or just pressing down with knuckles and working it all over..

Leave to dry for a day or two.
Trim the edges and you'll have a square of a truly exceptional material to work with.

Most people who handle it witjout being told what it is, generally have no clue.
Particularly if you use black jeans.

It's almost as good as leather Smiley

And because you have the offset grain, it won't tear or unravel.
Plus the pva makes it a little stiffer and mostly water proof.

Use it as you would leather.

there might even be a thread on it round here somewhere.

Nope but I have mentioned it a lot over the years Smiley

Following up on CA’s advice (which I am going to have to try) - the idea of laminating the denim, either by 2 pieces w/ glue or duct tape is that the denim by itself is not stiff enough to use as a pouch.

I used electrician’s tape or grip tape along the cut edge - gives it a nice finished look.

Going off what C_A posted, this video uses the same technique essentially for an ENTIRELY different purpose, but shows just how strong the result can be.

Lol yeah similar stuff.
Mine's just a lot more flexible, cos it's thinner..

You can use a single layer of denim and rub some ova into it.
It's just not as durable and the full double denim.

But if you use a simple butterfly pouch or six hole pouch and my cord, loop attachment method.
The cords grip the sides and put minimal strain on the holes.
So will work quite well for most fabrics.

Tent canvas is also a good fabric for sling pouches.

It's generally heavier than denim so works better as a single layer.

I'd still give it a coat of pva. Just adds extra durability and reduces fraying as well as adding waterproofness Smiley
