I made a 42” boomerang today
Oct 11th, 2021 at 3:27pm

Just got done making a 42” boomerang out of maple using some of my handy dandy Dewalt cordless power tools. I also used a utility knife and a hand saw. Took me an hour and forty five minutes. If I would have just used a knife like my previous three boomerangs it would have taken me prolly 15+ hours

And of course just as I predicted my boomerang broke on one side right where a knot was on the top so now after cutting it where the crack was it is a 30” boomerang now

This is the forth boomerang I have made, they can do a lot of damage to milk jugs and I’d like to try to hunt some birds or squirrels with it sometime. If you mean as far as coming back to me…it doesn’t, but I didn’t design it to  Grin

The weight of it is about 8 oz maybe less. It does fly better at 30”

Most traditional hunting boomerangs I’ve seen are heavier. I’ve always wanted to make one , I actually have a few bits of wood just sitting there waiting for me to work.

It might be on the light side for hunting. Perhaps add some weight to it if you’re serious about hunting with it. Won’t drop the speed much but will drastically increase killing potential.

If it does end up being too light I do have some aluminum wire I could wrap around it to give it more weight. It was a little bit heavier when it was 42” too…

If you do make one i highly recommend using a piece of wood that doesn’t have any knots in it that are larger than a pea in diameter otherwise there is a high chance of breakage in that spot. Also using power tools to remove most of the material saves a lot of time. Ash is a really good wood for making boomerangs, I’ve only made one out of ash so far though. It is only 25”

Well I could make a boomerang that returns but I want to actually use it for hunting, so once it hits the target, it isn’t going to come back to me anyway.
