Braided Y-Sling Modular Pouch Design
Oct 9th, 2021 at 5:29pm

Playing with modular split pouches like Legos, reading the forum, listening to sling podcast, I ended up realizing I could make a Y-sling that works surprisingly well. If you want more details on this design I used the base from my previous instructional "Modular Split Pouch Sling Design." To avoid repeating things I'll go directly to how to make it. Forgive all the random knots and what looks like a fancy finger release. I was trying to figure out what lengths to use and I can tell you 8ft on each frame is too much. You can get away with 6ft. and avoid shortening it the way I did.

Here we go. Make 3 identical frames. During experimentation I decided on 4 inches. This requires a support strand in the middle to hold the ball in place. I was considering later testing a 3 inch frame to possibly eliminate this strand, or covering the pouches with hockey-tape to make a net of some sort. Will do that later.

Connect them into a triangle overlapping each one going the same direction

Add a center string to support the tennis ball. Without it I found majority of the time the tennis ball would slip through the hole. I thought about shortening the frames to 3 inches, or adding some sort of netting support. That will be for a later time.

What you do then is pick one corner and make a finger loop. You then take the remainder two strands and tie them together as a release cord that is equal in distance to when you wear the finger loop. The picture is not to scale. I just tied them up to represent how they should be spaced apart.

Do it right and you will have a properly suspended ball. I loop over my middle finger and use thumb and pointer finger for my release.

Here is the completed Modular Y-Sling. Slinging it is a very different feeling. This is my first Y-sling after all. The timing is different but I will say it has a more natural/intuitive way to aim and release. It hasn't tangled on me yet (possibly because of the equilateral triangle design?) Kind of clumsy on the reload. But a very unique sling for my collection. Will attempt the tweaks I was discussing later.

Very nice. There are myriad ways to make this design. I've made many kinds.
I would agree with you both on the intuitive feeling and the equilateral suspension resulting in a very stable rotation that prevents cord twist.
My Y-sling is also modular. 1 pouch and 3 cords. Which allows me quick experimentation with different kinds of cord setups.

The conventional sling is ''2d'', this one is ''3d''.  Grin

I like it.  I've never made that design.  I'll have to try it.  I also like that the pictures fit inside the page.

Same idea just this time decided to use 3 leather strips. The braided one looks better. The leather one seems to throw slightly better. Could be psychological.
