New 3d scanning app, works.
Aug 31st, 2021 at 3:54pm

Over the years I have tried every budget 3d scanning option out there.
Even going so far as to being suckered into buying a £100 so called 3d scanner.

I'm a diehard optimist, when commercial scanners start at around £4000, for a 'hobby' machine.
I'm not sure why I expected anything functional for 100.
And I did not get a functional machine lol.

So when I watched a short video about a bit of software called qlone yesterday.
It looked somewhat miraculous.

Now the video is the only one linked to from the qlone site, so it's clearly a put up job.

But, what the hell it was only £16.

The whole thing hinges on a printed mat that acts to focus the phone's camera on the object being scanned.

After a few complete failures I thought I was probably trying too large an object. So I grabbed the coral slingstone from Guam and had a go with that.

It actually worked quite well.
Colour me impressed.

So it looks like you need to make a bunch of different sized 'mats' accept that the app is not miraculous, and work within its limits.

Now I can't print colours, but for the basic shape, this works well.

Gif of scan attached.

I think with a smaller mat i can get a lot more detail.
Here's the original: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1489147271/2#2

And gif of initial scan attached.

I think I'll try and print one out.
Without the colour it looks quite different, but the size and basic shape looks accurate.

So on the whole, I think for £16 it's actually quite a good bit of kit.

It helps that modern smart 'phones' are just mini miracles of technology and pack all the power of a decent desktop computer into a pocket sized bit of technical wizardry.

I've got a couple of actual stones I've picked up over the years, I'll have a go at making moulds of.

But for a first success, with something so cheap and relatively simple,  quite impressed.

Currently printing a coral stone scan in white.

Point first with no support.
So had to lose a couple on mm of point to give the printer an initial flat spot to start on.

But got to say, its looking pretty good do far Smiley

Given that this is my very first attempt, and the astute will notice that the repro is actually a mirror image (my fault, forgot to correct for it),
It's pretty impressive.

I didn't resize it either, just printed the unedited file the qlone app generated.

Once I've got the tricks and tweaks down, I should be able to get a really close copy.

Definitely a good £16 worth Smiley

I should be able to use a smaller start point as well.
Because the print bed does not move on a delta, you can get away with some really small anchor points for prints.

That's real nice. Seems like the sort of thing that might come in handy. Do you think you could scan in a sling? Not for printing, but would be good to have a 3D virtual model.

Well I have just discovered that it works a LOT better on the iPad.

Faster and much more accurate.
So I'll have to buy it twice Sad

On the other hand when they improve it on Android, it'll get updated.you want to see the scan I just did on the iPad in 10 minutes, after 2 hours failing to get another scan on the phone.

Looks amazing.

Still I guess less than 40 quid for something this good is we worth it.
And it can only get better on the phone.

Well a flat sling should work.
But the item needs to be stationary and on a printed mat. I'll give it a go Smiley

I am going to need a better turntable as well

So the big problem now us how to get the STL from the Poxy iPad to the computer.

I really donhate apple.
Nice but horribly expensive hardware, but such truly appalling software.

Lol ironically, I can use Google drive to share between all three machines.
And 15gb free storage.

It's not ideal but it works Smiley

Right this is the iPad scan.
Much more detailed.
I've included the obj file.
Unzip and open with windows 10 3d viewer.

If anyone wants any specific file format, let me know Smiley

I recommend viewing the gif on a phone or tablet where you can zoom in for the detail.

That's really cool. I'm guessing it can scale objects too? Miniature versions of slings and such could be pretty cool Cheesy

yep 3d objects are all vector based (defined by mathematical equations rather than by pixels) and infinitely scalable.

Right so now got to figure out how to scan a sling.

It's weird that while this is pretty good - it's not precise enough to replicate anything practical.
So has almost zero use in the real world.

great for cheaply adding iteems to virtual owrlds or video games or to be used in AR programs.
But for practical reverse engineering.

I'm still a lot better off with my cad program and a set of digital calipers.

I did make a second coral sling missile. printed in two halve and glues it together.
Came out pretty good.
And with a bit of judicious sanding and filing, the join oline is nigh on invisible.

The biggest problem with scanning a sling, is going to be the cords.

With this the best results are ogtained by scanning the object in one position and then adding a second scan in another position - so vertical and horizontal works fairly well.

Now unless you somehow make a slings cords stiff enough that you can change the position of the whole sling without altering the position of the cords - it simply won't work.

(oh god he's thinking again)

I wonder how stiff paracord liberally so0aked in pva glue will dry.

I'll let you know tomorrow Smiley

Also removing the corte of the paracord and pushing some stiff wire through.  Not sure how much wire i have, but I'll give it a go Smiley
